Prince William and Princess Kate Reportedly “Want No Part” in Sussex Drama as Harry and Meghan Prepare for UK Return
Prince William and Princess Kate are reportedly determined not to let Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s unexpected return to Britain reopen a chapter they believe they have already left behind.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are preparing to relocate to the UK with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, six years after stepping away from royal duties and establishing their life in California. Their children are expected to begin school in Britain in September, while Harry and Meghan will live in a private, non-royal residence outside London.
The move has immediately raised questions about whether living in the same country could finally create an opportunity to repair Harry’s deeply strained relationship with William.
But according to new reports, the Prince and Princess of Wales have little interest in allowing the Sussexes’ return to disrupt their lives.
William and Kate reportedly “want no part” in fresh drama

Sources quoted by the Mirror claim William and Kate intend to remain focused on their family, public duties and future rather than become drawn back into tensions surrounding Harry and Meghan.
One source said the Sussexes’ return would inevitably generate headlines but insisted it would have “no bearing” on how the Prince and Princess of Wales move forward.
The source suggested that the challenges William and Kate have faced over recent years have only strengthened their determination to concentrate on their children and their public responsibilities.
Another insider was more pointed, claiming that Harry and Meghan are free to make their own decisions but that William and Kate consider that difficult period of their lives to be behind them.
According to the source, the Waleses “do not have the time or the energy” for further negativity or drama. These comments are attributed to unnamed sources and have not been publicly confirmed by William or Kate.
William reportedly sees “no way back” to royal duties
One issue on which the Palace position appears considerably clearer is Harry and Meghan’s official status.
Their return to Britain will not mean a return to life as working royals.
The couple will continue as private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family, and the “half-in, half-out” arrangement discussed around their 2020 departure is not being revived.
The Mirror reports that William remains adamant there can be “no way back” for the Sussexes to rejoin the institution in an official capacity and that he and King Charles are united on rejecting any hybrid royal role.
That distinction is significant.
Harry and Meghan may once again live close to the Royal Family, but geographical proximity will not restore the positions they surrendered six years ago.
Years of public conflict still hang over the brothers
Harry and William’s relationship has been strained for years, with tensions becoming increasingly public following the Sussexes’ departure in 2020.
The Oprah Winfrey interview, Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir Spare all brought private family disagreements into public view. In Spare, Harry described an alleged physical confrontation with William and detailed other deeply personal disputes involving members of the Royal Family.
Those revelations intensified an already serious breakdown in trust between the brothers. Recent reporting continues to describe their relationship as severely damaged.
The Sussexes’ return therefore creates an unusual situation: Harry and William will once again be living in the same country, but there is currently no public indication that a reunion between them has been arranged.
King Charles appears to be taking a different approach
While William is reported to remain resistant to reconciliation, Harry’s relationship with his father has shown signs of movement.
King Charles was informed on Sunday about the Sussexes’ decision to return. Reports indicate that while the monarch has no intention of changing Harry and Meghan’s official royal status, he welcomes the opportunity to see more of his younger son and grandchildren privately.
That follows an important family reunion at Highgrove last month.
Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet reportedly spent private time with Charles and Queen Camilla there, marking the King’s first meeting with his Sussex grandchildren in four years.
The meeting represented a notable change after years in which Harry’s visits to Britain were generally brief and family contact was limited.
For William, however, there has been no comparable breakthrough.
Harry once said he could not bring his family back

The Sussexes’ decision is particularly striking because of Harry’s previous concerns about security in Britain.
After losing his legal challenge over his UK security arrangements in May 2025, Harry said he could not envision bringing Meghan and their children back under the circumstances at the time.
As recently as June 2026, representatives for the Sussexes said Harry was exploring “every available option” to make a family visit to Britain possible safely.
The family’s security arrangements following their relocation have not been publicly disclosed. The UK government has maintained that it does not discuss individual protective-security arrangements in detail.
The Sussexes are returning — but their California chapter is not disappearing
Harry and Meghan’s relocation does not appear to represent a complete abandonment of their American life.
Reports indicate they intend to retain their California residence as well as their property in Portugal while establishing a home in Britain. Meghan is also expected to continue her business activities after the move.
Their return therefore creates a new arrangement rather than recreating their pre-2020 royal life.
Archie and Lilibet will attend British schools. Harry will be closer to his UK charities and his father. But the Sussexes will remain financially and professionally independent from the monarchy.
And crucially, there is still no indication that William intends to reopen the door to an official royal role for his younger brother.
Could living closer eventually change anything?

The move inevitably creates opportunities for contact that were far more difficult when Harry and his family lived thousands of miles away.
Some royal observers have suggested that simply being in Britain could increase the chances of eventual reconciliation, particularly as Archie and Lilibet will now live closer to their cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. But that remains speculation rather than evidence that William and Harry are preparing to repair their relationship.
For now, the contrast inside the Royal Family is striking.
King Charles is reportedly prepared to welcome more private contact with Harry and his grandchildren, while William and Kate are said to be concentrating firmly on their own family and future.
Harry and Meghan may be coming back to Britain, but according to those close to the Waleses, their return does not mean the painful divisions of the past have disappeared — or that William is ready to revisit them.
