Dolly Parton Once Revealed How She Wanted to Be Remembered — The One Show Unearths Emotional BBC Footage

Dolly Parton once offered a remarkably simple answer when asked how she hoped the world would remember her. Years later, following her death at 80, those words returned with heartbreaking force as The One Show paid tribute to the country music legend.

The emotional tribute aired on Wednesday, August 26, following news that Dolly had died the previous evening, August 25. Her family confirmed the death of the superstar, whose extraordinary career produced enduring hits including “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene.”

The programme described Dolly as a “big friend of the show” and looked back at her long relationship with the BBC One programme through a collection of archive interviews, performances and previously seen footage.

Dolly’s answer from 2007 takes on new meaning

Among the footage shown was an unearthed clip from 2007, recorded around the UK launch of Dolly’s Imagination Library.

In the clip, Dolly was asked to consider how she would want to be remembered a century into the future.

Her response was strikingly modest.

“Well, actually, I would love for people to be able to say that I was somebody that cared. I’d just as soon be remembered for that than anything.”

The words were spoken nearly two decades before her death, but their meaning felt especially poignant following the news of her passing.

For an artist who achieved worldwide fame, sold more than 100 million records and became one of country music’s most recognisable figures, Dolly chose not to point to her awards, chart success or celebrity status.

Instead, she wanted to be remembered for caring.

That sentiment also reflects the importance of her charitable work, particularly the Imagination Library, the children’s book-gifting programme she launched in 1995. The initiative was inspired by her father, Robert Lee Parton, who could not read or write, and went on to provide more than 270 million books to children around the world.

Alex Jones shares a deeply personal tribute

Following the archive montage, Alex Jones, who interviewed Dolly numerous times throughout her years on The One Show, appeared in a video message from her holiday.

Jones admitted that hearing of Dolly’s death had affected her profoundly.

“We heard last night, of course, about lovely Dolly, and it honestly shook me to my core,” she said.

With The One Show celebrating its 20th anniversary, Jones had recently been reflecting on some of the programme’s favourite guests. For her, Dolly stood out above the rest.

“Dolly was hands down my absolute favourite,” Jones said.

She remembered the singer as someone who seemed to embody seemingly contrasting qualities at once — strong yet gentle, warm yet feisty.

“So strong, but so soft. So lovely, but feisty at the same time. The absolute embodiment of every woman,” she recalled.

Jones also described having Dolly on the programme as “such a treat” and ended her tribute with a simple reflection on the impact of the star’s death:

“the world will be a dimmer place without her.”

Viewers remember Dolly

The tribute quickly prompted an emotional response from viewers on social media, with fans sharing their own memories of the beloved singer.

One viewer wrote: “Aww, going to miss our Dolly. But she’s left us with so much to remember her by.”

Another simply posted: “RIP dolly parton.”

The reaction reflected the enormous affection Dolly inspired throughout her career. Her music crossed generations, while her distinctive personality and philanthropic work made her familiar far beyond the world of country music.

For The One Show, however, the most powerful reminder of Dolly’s legacy may have been her own words from 2007.

She had already said exactly how she wanted to be remembered.

Not simply as a superstar. Not simply as a songwriter or performer.

But as somebody who cared.
