Duchess Sophie Begins Major Royal Tour With A Packed Week Ahead — From Gender Equality To One Of The World’s Natural Wonders
The Duchess of Edinburgh has begun one of her most wide-ranging royal tours of the year, with a packed five-day programme taking her across Zambia for a series of engagements focused on some of the causes closest to her heart.
From gender equality and education to climate, nature and the fight against avoidable blindness, Sophie’s visit is set to shine a spotlight on issues she has championed throughout her years of royal service.
The Duchess is visiting the Republic of Zambia from Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 19, at the request of the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Her schedule will take her to Lusaka, Lower Zambezi and Livingstone as she represents the longstanding relationship between Zambia and the United Kingdom.
A Royal Tour With A Meaningful Mission
Unlike a purely ceremonial visit, Sophie’s itinerary places considerable emphasis on causes that have become closely associated with her royal work.
During her time in Zambia, the Duchess is expected to focus on gender equality, environmental protection, education and research partnerships, while also highlighting international efforts to tackle avoidable blindness.
One of the most significant moments of the tour will come when Sophie visits Community House and meets President Hichilema.

Sophie Heads To One Of The World’s Natural Wonders
Among the most striking locations on Sophie’s itinerary is Livingstone, where she will visit Mosi-oa-Tunya — widely known as Victoria Falls and recognised as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
During the visit, the Duchess will also lay a posy at the First World War memorial.
The location adds a particularly symbolic element to the tour, combining Zambia’s extraordinary natural landscape with a moment of remembrance.
For a royal visit otherwise packed with meetings and charitable engagements, the stop promises to be one of the most memorable moments of Sophie’s week.
A Cause Close To Sophie’s Heart
Sophie’s work on avoidable blindness will also feature prominently during the tour.
As Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, the Duchess will undertake engagements connected to efforts to prevent and eliminate avoidable sight loss.
Her programme includes visits involving the charities Orbis and Sightsavers.
She is also due to visit a health clinic in Mukuni Village, where work is taking place as part of a programme aimed at eliminating trachoma.
Trachoma is a major cause of preventable blindness, making the visit particularly relevant to Sophie’s long-standing advocacy in this area.
The engagement will give the Duchess an opportunity to see the work taking place on the ground and meet people connected with efforts to improve eye health.

During that visit, the group attended an event where photographs showed Sophie and Zara appearing relaxed as they mingled with other guests.
More than a decade later, Sophie is returning to Zambia — this time with an itinerary centred around a much broader range of issues.
