The Crowd Fell Silent As Lainey Wilson Stepped Forward In Black — Then The First Notes Of “Amazing Grace” Began To Rise. Lainey Wilson Honored The Victims Of September 11 With A Moving Performance Of “Amazing Grace,” Standing Before The Audience In A Simple Black Suit As A Choir Gathered Behind Her. There Were No Flashy Moments. No Need For Them. Her Voice Carried The Weight Of The Moment As The Choir Slowly Joined Her, Turning The Familiar Hymn Into A Solemn Remembrance For The Lives Lost And The Families Forever Changed. With Every Note, The Room Seemed To Grow Quieter. For A Few Minutes, It Wasn’t About The Stage Or The Spotlight. It Was About Remembering The People Who Never Came Home — And The Empty Places They Left Behind. One Voice. One Hymn. One Moment Of Remembrance That Left The Room Listening In Silence.

LAINEY WILSON LEFT THE COWBOY HAT AT HOME — THEN SANG “AMAZING GRACE” BENEATH THE 9/11 TRIBUTE LIGHTS

Lainey Wilson left the bell-bottoms and cowboy hat at home and walked onto one of the most solemn stages of her career in a black suit, a choir behind her and “Amazing Grace” carrying through Lower Manhattan.

Wilson performed the beloved hymn at the 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11 attacks, singing beneath the twin beams of the Tribute in Light at the site where the World Trade Center once stood. She appeared as part of “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan,” alongside Cyndi Lauper and John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting.

For the first time in 25 years, the commemoration was broadcast live.

Each artist performed directly beneath the beams. Wilson chose “Amazing Grace” herself — and then stripped everything else away.

No signature hat. No flare jeans. Just a black suit, a choir and a hymn that has carried generations through grief.

She Said 9/11 Is a Reminder of Who Americans Are

Before the performance, Wilson said she was honored to take part in a moment dedicated to first responders, families and communities forever changed by the attacks.

“The courage, bravery, and heroism displayed in response to 9/11 is a reminder of who we are as Americans and the strength and compassion we show one another at our most difficult moments,” she said in a statement.

The response was immediate, with viewers flooding social media to say the rendition brought them to tears.

The ceremony honored the 2,977 people killed in the attacks and also featured the American and British national anthems, along with a performance of “Hymn to the Fallen.”

Lainey Wilson Delivers Powerful Performance Of “Amazing Grace” From Site Where Twin Towers Fell 25 Years Ago During 9/11 Tribute Special

Since 2002, the Tribute in Light has sent two white beams four miles into the sky over Manhattan every September 11 — one representing each tower.

Singing beneath those beams means performing inside a memorial while the memorial itself is illuminated.

She Was Only Nine When the Towers Fell

Wilson was born on May 19, 1992, in Baskin, Louisiana, a small farming town of just a few hundred people.

On September 11, 2001, she was nine years old.

She was not standing at that memorial simply as a country star revisiting a chapter of American history. She was there as someone who had been a child in a Louisiana classroom when the towers fell — and who returned 25 years later with a grown woman’s voice.

That distance matters.

She grew up during the years that followed 9/11 and eventually became one of country music’s biggest names. On the anniversary, she stood at Ground Zero and sang a hymn for people she had never met.

Every artist who takes that stage brings something personal with them.

Wilson brought the memory of a nine-year-old girl and the perspective of the woman she became.

“Amazing Grace” Was the Song She Had Been Moving Toward All Year

The choice of “Amazing Grace” also reflected something Wilson had made increasingly visible throughout 2026: her faith.

In April, she released “The Jesus I Know Now” with Brandon Lake, a country worship and southern gospel track co-written with Emily Weisband and Luke Laird. It marked one of the clearest expressions of faith she had put on record.

Then, in June, Wilson stopped her show at Zoo Amphitheatre in Oklahoma City to speak to the crowd about God. She told the audience that she reads the Bible almost every day and had learned to turn to Him first rather than the things she once relied on.

Three months later, she was standing beneath the Tribute in Light, singing “Amazing Grace” at Ground Zero.

For Wilson, the performance came after a year in which her faith had increasingly become part of her public story. But the setting gave those words a different weight.

“Amazing Grace” has endured at funerals, memorials and moments of national tragedy for generations because it does not attempt to explain grief. It simply sits beside people in it.

That made the hymn feel especially fitting beneath those two beams.

Wilson did not need the cowboy hat.

She did not need the usual country-star spectacle.

She stepped beneath the lights in black, let the choir surround her, and sang.
