BBC thriller Nightsleeper leaves viewers on the edge of their seats

A routine overnight journey from Glasgow to London becomes a fight for survival when a sleeper train is hacked and sent racing towards disaster.

For viewers searching for a thriller they can devour in one sitting, Nightsleeper offers six episodes of escalating tension, twists and cliffhangers.

The BBC drama, starring Peaky Blinders actor Joe Cole and Alexandra Roach, first aired in 2024 and quickly attracted attention for its high-pressure storyline. All six episodes of the first series are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

A train journey turns into a race against time

Nightsleeper unfolds in real time over one terrifying night.

The story centres on a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London. What should be a routine overnight journey becomes a nightmare when a catastrophic cyber attack takes control of the train, leaving passengers trapped aboard as it speeds towards an uncertain fate.

Outside the train, a government agency scrambles to find a way to intervene before it is too late.

At the centre of the crisis are two strangers who find themselves working together from opposite sides of the emergency.

Joe Roag, played by Joe Cole, is a passenger on the train who also happens to be a police officer. Meanwhile, Abby Aysgarth, played by Alexandra Roach, is the acting technical director at the National Cyber Security Centre.

Joe is caught up in the unfolding danger firsthand, while Abby attempts to help from outside. Their only option is to work together as the clock continues to run down.

The BBC’s official premise asks: “Time is running out. When hackers send a train hurtling towards death and destruction, can two strangers stop it before it meets its final destination?”

The series was written as a fast-moving thriller, with each episode pushing the passengers and those trying to rescue them closer to catastrophe.

Viewers called it a binge-worthy thriller

The show’s constant twists and cliffhangers made it particularly popular with viewers who enjoy watching several episodes back to back.

One IMDb viewer described the series as hugely entertaining and engaging, praising its combination of suspense, humour and cheeky moments. They said they had recommended it to family and friends as a fun choice for a night in front of the television.

Another viewer compared the premise to the 1994 action film Speed, imagining the same kind of relentless tension but transferred to a British train.

“This is a great action packed drama with gripping suspense, that provides great entertainment,” they wrote.

A third viewer said they had “binge watched” the entire series and were surprised by how effectively it maintained their attention. They explained that they normally lose interest in shows with six or more episodes, but found themselves hooked from the opening episode through to the finale.

The series also caught the attention of The Telegraph. Critic Keith Watson described Nightsleeper as “built for binge-watching”, pointing to its cliffhangers as a major reason it is difficult to stop watching.

The reception was not universally positive, however. Other critics raised concerns about the show’s plausibility and its mixture of serious thriller elements with frequent humour.

BBC boards a second series of Nightsleeper - Televisual

Season 2 is taking the story out to sea

For fans wondering whether the story would return, the BBC confirmed in June 2026 that Nightsleeper had been renewed for a second series.

The new six-part thriller will leave the railway behind and move the action onto the Irish Sea. Instead of a hacked sleeper train, the next story will unfold aboard a ship travelling between Belfast and Liverpool.

The new season is being produced by Element Pictures, a Fremantle company, and will again be written by BAFTA and RTS award-winning writer Nick Leather. Filming is taking place in Belfast.

Further details have since emerged about the new cast. Colin Morgan, Madeleine Mantock and Christian Cooke will lead the new ensemble, with Rupert Penry-Jones, Ian McElhinney and Sally Lindsay among the other cast members.

The second series will follow the same real-time thriller concept but introduce a new group of characters and a very different setting.

For now, viewers who missed the first series can catch up with all six episodes of Nightsleeper on BBC iPlayer.
