The initial health announcement was shared through Sheik’s official Instagram account.

His family said they would not release additional information about his condition at the time, explaining that they wanted to protect Duncan and the family during what they described as an “incredibly difficult time.”

They also said they would provide further updates when appropriate and thanked fans for their continued love and support.

The Hit That Made Him Famous

Sheik first rose to prominence with “Barely Breathing,” the breakout single from his 1996 self-titled debut album.

The song reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Sheik a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1998. It later appeared in television series including “Girls” and “Glee.”

In a 2015 interview with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), Sheik reflected on the unexpected impact of the song, saying it had “taken on a life of its own.” He also described its success as a major radio hit as “life-changing.”

Rather than remaining solely associated with pop music, however, Sheik went on to build a significant career in musical theater.

From ‘Barely Breathing’ to Broadway

Sheik collaborated with Steven Sater on the music for “Spring Awakening,” the 2006 Broadway musical that became one of the defining works of his theater career.

The production earned eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, while Sheik won the Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. He also received a Grammy for the musical’s cast album.

The original cast included future “Glee” stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. In his BMI interview, Sheik recalled his affection for the cast and the process of developing the earliest version of the musical, describing those memories as ones he would always cherish.

Sheik later continued exploring unconventional material for the stage. In 2016, he wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway adaptation of “American Psycho,” based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel and the 2000 film starring Christian Bale.

A Career Beyond His Signature Hit

Following “Barely Breathing,” Sheik released nine studio albums. His most recent album was “Claptrap,” released in 2022.

His work in theater continued alongside his recording career, establishing him as both a singer-songwriter and composer whose work extended well beyond the song that first made him famous. His career included projects such as “American Psycho” and “Spring Awakening,” the latter becoming his most celebrated theatrical achievement.

Before his death, Sheik was also connected to upcoming theater projects, including new and returning productions featuring his work.

Remembering Duncan Sheik

In the 2015 BMI interview, Sheik offered a glimpse into his everyday life. He said he would begin his mornings with coffee and physical activity, such as cycling or running. He also described himself as a practicing Buddhist who chanted in the morning and evening.

When he was not working elsewhere, he would retreat to a second bedroom in his apartment that he called “Studio B,” where he worked on whatever musical project was in front of him.

From a Grammy-nominated ’90s pop hit to two Tony Awards and a lasting place in Broadway history, Sheik built a career that crossed musical worlds. He died in Manhattan at 56, leaving behind a body of work that extended from intimate singer-songwriter recordings to some of modern musical theater’s most recognizable scores.
