James Norton Opens Up About The Shocking History Behind Mr. Jones, His Search For The Truth And His Unexpected Challenge In Joss Whedon’s The Nevers

James Norton was stunned by a piece of history he believes the world has failed to understand — and bringing that story to the screen became far more than just another acting role.

In a revealing interview with Collider, the British actor discussed his transformation into Welsh journalist Gareth Jones in Mr. Jones, the historical atrocities that shocked him during his research, and the extraordinary courage of a man who risked everything to expose the truth. He also offered a glimpse into his experience filming Joss Whedon’s HBO science-fiction series The Nevers, where he took on a character unlike anything audiences had seen from him before.

From confronting forgotten history to exploring an outrageous, larger-than-life personality, Norton made clear that the characters with the greatest impact are often the ones that demand the most from him.

A HISTORICAL TRAGEDY THAT LEFT JAMES NORTON SHOCKED

Directed by Agnieszka Holland and written by Andrea Chalupa, Mr. Jones follows Gareth Jones, an ambitious young Welsh journalist who travels to Moscow to investigate the propaganda being spread by Hitler and Stalin on the eve of World War II.

His investigation leads him toward the truth about the Holodomor, the devastating famine in Soviet Ukraine that claimed millions of lives. Jones’s determination to expose what was happening would eventually inspire George Orwell’s celebrated novel Animal Farm.

For Norton, discovering the story was an eye-opening experience.

Despite being British, he admitted that he had never heard of Gareth Jones before reading the screenplay. Even more surprising was how little he knew about the Holodomor, particularly when compared with the history of the Holocaust, which had received considerably more attention in his education.

The scale of the tragedy left him deeply unsettled.

Norton was particularly struck by the fact that the Holodomor remained unrecognized as a genocide by much of the international community at the time of the interview. He saw the film as an opportunity to bring an overlooked chapter of history to a wider audience.

Working with director Agnieszka Holland made the opportunity even more compelling.

He felt the project carried an important responsibility: telling a story that deserved greater recognition, understanding and discussion.

WHY PLAYING GARETH JONES WAS A PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Portraying a real historical figure came with a responsibility Norton did not take lightly.

He explained that playing someone who actually lived requires an actor to respect both the person’s physical appearance and emotional character. With Gareth Jones, however, the differences between the two men were immediately apparent.

Jones was described by his contemporaries as a relatively short, serious Welshman who wore glasses and constantly filled his notebooks with observations.

Norton, by contrast, stands nearly 6 feet 2 inches tall and is not Welsh.

Rather than seeing those differences as obstacles, he embraced them as part of the challenge.

What particularly attracted him was Jones’s relentless determination as a journalist. He wanted to understand a man driven by an uncompromising pursuit of factual truth, even when powerful political forces stood in his way.

That determination ultimately came at an extraordinary cost.

Jones lost his life the day before his 30th birthday, after refusing to abandon his pursuit of the truth in the face of terrifying totalitarian regimes.

Norton also wanted to avoid portraying him as nothing more than a solemn historical figure.

Although Jones was undeniably earnest and serious about his work, there was another side to his personality: a playful streak and an appetite for adventure. Finding that balance became central to Norton’s performance.

THE ONE DETAIL THAT HELPED NORTON DISCOVER THE REAL MAN

For Norton, preparation went far beyond learning lines and studying historical records.

He believed actors had an obligation to understand the world surrounding the characters they portray. That meant reading extensively about the Holodomor, studying the political climate of the period and learning the historical facts before stepping onto the set.

He also worked on Jones’s Welsh accent and physical mannerisms.

But Norton made an important distinction between researching a character and actually bringing that person to life.

Once filming began, he believed the actor had to let go of the academic material and concentrate on discovering the individual’s soul.

Otherwise, there was a danger of performing the history rather than portraying the human being behind it.

One particular piece of research proved especially valuable: a letter written by one of Jones’s great aunts.

The letter described how Jones behaved when he returned from his travels and spent time with his young nieces and nephews.

Rather than remaining the serious, intense journalist people might have expected, he would sit on the floor with the children, play with them and bounce around with the energy of a Labrador.

They absolutely adored him.

That glimpse of his playful, almost childlike personality gave Norton something essential to work with. It revealed a warmth and liveliness that could easily have disappeared beneath the weight of his historical achievements.

For the actor, understanding that side of Jones was just as important as understanding his political convictions.

‘WE NEED AS MANY GARETH JONES AS WE POSSIBLY CAN’

The conversation then turned to the courage required of journalists who risk their lives to expose uncomfortable truths.

Norton believed Gareth Jones’s story carried particular relevance in a world where political leaders and governments were increasingly willing to manipulate information.

He argued that society needed more people prepared to defend the truth, even when doing so came with serious personal consequences.

If Mr. Jones inspired a new generation of aspiring journalists to pursue the truth, Norton said, that would be an extraordinary outcome.

He admired Jones’s moral convictions and his willingness to put himself in danger for something greater than personal safety.

Jones wanted to expose the suffering of millions, challenge the Communist Party and hold Stalin’s regime accountable for what had happened.

But Norton also recognized that there was another powerful force driving the journalist: his restless, adventurous personality.

Jones was constantly moving from one mission to another.

After finally getting his findings published in the British and American press and exposing the Soviet Union’s actions, he set off on another journey, this time to Mongolia.

It was there that his life came to a tragic end.

Jones was kidnapped by a tribe believed to have been hired by the Soviet Union and killed the day before his 30th birthday.

Norton did not believe Jones necessarily set out intending to sacrifice his life. Instead, he saw a remarkable combination of moral courage, selflessness and an insatiable appetite for adventure.

Together, those qualities made Jones an extraordinary figure.

JAMES NORTON REVEALS HOW MUCH HE ADMIRES JOSS WHEDON

Away from the historical weight of Mr. Jones, Norton was also working on a very different project: Joss Whedon’s HBO science-fiction series The Nevers.

At the time of the June 2020 interview, production had been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team had completed approximately five episodes, putting them almost exactly halfway through the planned shoot. Another five episodes remained, with filming taking place in London.

Despite the unexpected interruption, Norton said there was every intention to finish the series. The production had not yet established a firm return date, but discussions were underway about safety measures that would allow filming to resume.

He was particularly enthusiastic about the experience of working with Whedon.

Norton described the filmmaker as an extraordinary creative mind, praising his energy, curiosity, creativity and humility.

What impressed him most was the contrast between Whedon’s considerable intellectual and directorial influence and his understated personality on set.

Despite wielding enormous creative authority, Norton said Whedon was remarkably humble, soft-spoken and self-deprecating.

His admiration was unmistakable.

Norton spoke warmly about the filmmaker, making it clear that the opportunity to work with him was something he genuinely valued.

HUGO SWANN: A WILDLY DIFFERENT CHARACTER FOR NORTON

One of the biggest attractions of The Nevers was Norton’s character, Hugo Swann.

At the time, however, the actor admitted he was still discovering exactly who Swann was. With production only halfway complete, much of the character’s journey had yet to unfold.

What he already knew was that Swann was anything but ordinary.

A larger-than-life, playful and flamboyant personality, Hugo Swann is pansexual, sex-obsessed and the owner of a club. The character offered Norton an opportunity to explore a much more theatrical and outrageous side of his acting abilities.

But the actor was particularly interested in what lay beneath that extravagant exterior.

He explained that Whedon’s approach to storytelling gave him confidence that Swann would have genuine emotional depth, rather than existing simply as an exaggerated comic character.

For Norton, the combination was irresistible.

He could embrace the character’s outrageous personality while still exploring the underlying emotions, motivations and complexity that made him human.

Although he was still working out the details of this unusual character, he described the experience as an absolute joy.

NORTON WANTS TO EXPLORE MORE COMEDY — BUT CHARACTER COMES FIRST

The interview also offered a glimpse into the kinds of roles Norton hoped to pursue in the future.

Surprisingly, comedy was high on his list.

He revealed that he had enjoyed experimenting with comedy during his university years, although he had rarely been given the opportunity to explore that side of his acting career professionally.

He was quick to acknowledge that he did not consider himself a natural comedian or a dedicated comedic actor.

Nevertheless, The Nevers had given him an enjoyable opportunity to work with comedy while remaining firmly grounded in dramatic storytelling.

He was interested in taking on more challenges in the genre, but he had no intention of limiting himself to one particular style.

Whether it was comedy, horror, science fiction or something entirely different, his decision ultimately came down to one thing.

The character.

Norton explained that genre was secondary to the quality of the person he was being asked to portray. If a character was fully developed, emotionally compelling and offered something worth exploring, he was willing to take on almost anything.

For him, the human story always came first.

Mr. Jones became available digitally on June 19, 2020, followed by its on-demand release on July 3, 2020.
