Florida has a lot of interesting abandoned places that are worth exploring, or at the very least learning about if you can’t actually get onto the property. It’s not all beaches, alligators, and funny headlines coming out of this state. But what’s been dubbed the “Bridge to Nowhere” is truly something special. The Suwannee Springs Bridge in Live Oak, Florida is tucked away in the forest, off of a quiet street, over the beautiful Suwannee River. If you weren’t in the know, you would never have a sense that it was there. The bridge has an extremely unique history. Come see what makes this abandoned bridge to nowhere in Florida such a special hidden gem.

The Suwannee Springs Bridge in Florida, also nicknamed Graffiti Bridge and the Bridge to Nowhere in Florida is owned by the state and has since been long forgotten by many.

Completed in 1931 by a company called Austin Brothers Bridge Company, this beautiful bridge was used for many years as the main roadway within the area. It spans 160 feet over the river and was built in a traditional Parker design with riveted connections and concrete T beams.

Yet, in 1971, the bridge officially closed to vehicular traffic.

An updated bridge bypass was created, which left the bridge to become forgotten over time. What was once a vibrant causeway and an integral part of city life suddenly became dilapidated and forgotten.

Today, the bridge still stands and remains popular for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

The steel is still as strong as ever, and visitors are able to come and snag some photos and drone videos of the area. It’s become a popular spot for photograph due to its positioning over the river, offering beautiful views across the stunning Florida landscape.

But what really makes the Bridge to Nowhere popular over the years is the graffiti that has made the bridge hauntingly beautiful.

Local artists have come to explore the bridge and create murals, paintings, tags, and so forth, coloring a uniquely beautiful display. It’s an interesting dynamic, the way the industrial, rusty bridge looks exploding with a burst of vibrant spray paint colors. The organic lines of the graffiti contrast in a striking way with the utilitarian design of the bridge. Here, art lives in perfect harmony with the ordinary. What was once a forgotten piece of history has become a dynamic new art installation.

While it’s no longer drivable, this bridge still remains a worthwhile place to visit on foot.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt that guests will be able to take some abandoned bridge photos with the beauty of the Suwannee River as the backdrop. Whether you come for a photoshoot, to take in work by local artists, or to just spend some time pensively enjoying the river, the Suwanee Springs Bridge is the place to do it. It’s one of the most fascinating abandoned places in Florida.
