One fan described the adaptation as very promising, while making it clear that they hope Cathy remains as evil as she is in the novel.
Another viewer made a similar point, saying they did not want the series to soften Cathy or turn her into a sympathetic figure. For them, part of the character’s appeal is the fact that she is both an extraordinary literary creation and deeply despicable.

Zoe Kazan is the writer and co-showrunner behind the new series, working alongside Jeb Stuart. Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the acclaimed 1955 film version of East of Eden.
That family connection gives the new adaptation an added personal dimension for Kazan, who has spoken about how closely she studied Steinbeck’s original work while developing the series.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Kazan explained that Steinbeck’s handwritten journals became an important resource during the adaptation. The author wrote the day’s pages of his book on the right-hand side and letters to his editor on the left, giving Kazan a glimpse into his thinking and intentions.

The decision to focus more closely on Cathy is one of the defining features of Netflix’s adaptation.

East of Eden is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 1, 2026, with all seven episodes forming the limited series adaptation.
The project joins a crowded autumn period-drama lineup.
Netflix is also preparing its new television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, the first TV version of the beloved novel since the acclaimed 1995 production. Elsewhere, The Gilded Age is returning for season four later in the fall, while a new big-screen adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is also heading to cinemas.
For now, East of Eden has one particularly difficult task ahead: bringing one of America’s best-known literary works to a new generation while making Cathy Ames the character viewers cannot stop watching.
And judging by the reaction to the trailer, Florence Pugh may already have their attention.
