The Eerie Real-Life Moment That Inspired Netflix’s The Whisper Man
The most unsettling idea in Netflix’s The Whisper Man began with something Alex North’s young son said at home.
North was working on a story about fathers and sons when an ordinary moment with his child gave him the chilling detail he had been missing. He was in the kitchen and heard his son playing alone in another room. When North looked in and asked what he was doing, the boy calmly replied:
“I’m just playing with the boy in the floor.”
The comment stayed with North. More importantly, it gave him a way into the crime thriller he had been struggling to develop.
“I knew then that the boy in my story would have imaginary friends like that, and that a few of them might turn out to be more than they seemed,” North later told Australia’s Better Reading blog.
That unsettling exchange would eventually become one of the key ideas behind The Whisper Man, the 2019 bestselling novel that has now been adapted into a Netflix thriller starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan.
A creepy comment became the starting point
North has explained that his original plan was much more grounded. He wanted to write about fathers and sons, specifically a widowed father struggling to reconnect with his grieving young son.
He also wanted the story to have a crime-thriller framework with spooky elements. What he lacked was the central idea that could bring those two parts together.
His son’s comment provided it.
North had already been fascinated by online discussions in which parents shared strange and unsettling things their children had said. Some of the stories were eerie precisely because the children delivered them with complete matter-of-factness.
One example involved a child pointing toward a graveyard and saying, “that’s where I used to live.”
Another described a child talking about a man with a long neck in a closet. The story became even more disturbing when the parents discovered that someone had died by suicide in the house years earlier.
For North, those stories offered the perfect foundation for the atmosphere he wanted. Children can invent elaborate explanations for the world around them, but the possibility that they might occasionally notice something adults cannot see makes such stories particularly unsettling.
The experience with his own son became the spark. North eventually decided that his fictional child, Jake, would have imaginary friends too, with some of them turning out to be far more disturbing than they first appeared.
From a family moment to The Whisper Man
The resulting novel centers on Tom Kennedy and his young son, Jake. After the death of Tom’s wife, father and son move to the village of Featherbank in search of a fresh start.
But Featherbank has a dark history.
Twenty years earlier, a serial killer known as the Whisper Man had abducted and murdered five young boys. He earned his nickname because he would target vulnerable children and whisper outside their windows at night. When another child disappears, the old case suddenly feels uncomfortably close to the present.
Jake also begins behaving strangely. His imaginary friends become increasingly frightening, and he says he hears a monster whispering outside his bedroom window.
The story combines that supernatural unease with a crime investigation and a father-son relationship at its center. What began with one unsettling sentence from North’s son became a novel that went on to become an international bestseller. The book was also a New York Times bestseller.
Netflix brings the story to the screen
Netflix’s 2026 adaptation keeps the story’s central mystery while bringing the father-son conflict to the screen.
Robert De Niro plays Peter Willis, a retired detective who once put away the serial killer connected to the case. Adam Scott plays Tom Kennedy, whose young son is abducted, while Michelle Monaghan plays detective Amanda Beck.
The disappearance forces Tom to seek help from his estranged father. Their investigation leads back to the decades-old case involving the killer known as the Whisper Man, raising the possibility that the crimes they thought belonged to the past may not be finished after all.
The film, directed by James Ashcroft, is based on North’s bestselling novel and was released on Netflix in 2026.
The unsettling part is where the story began
Despite the real-life incident that inspired its most memorable idea, The Whisper Man is not based on a true crime case. The story and its characters are fictional. What is real is the strange family moment that helped North imagine Jake’s world and set the novel on its path.
That may be what makes the origin of The Whisper Man so memorable. The inspiration wasn’t a notorious murder, a mysterious disappearance, or an old unsolved case.
It was a child, playing at home, who casually said he was playing with a boy who wasn’t there.
