Scotty McCreery Sang “The Dash” In Front Of The U.S. Capitol — Then A Fallen Soldier’s Family Saw His Story Come To Life

Footage of SFC Lewis Clark Walton appeared behind McCreery.

Walton had been killed in action during the Vietnam War, but his remains were not recovered and returned home until 36 years later.

His widow and adult children were sitting in the audience.

As photographs and footage of Walton and his family appeared, the meaning of McCreery’s performance suddenly became painfully tangible. Members of Walton’s family were visibly moved, wiping away tears as the song continued.

The “dash” was no longer an abstract idea.

McCreery Carried His Own Connection To The Song

“The Dash” also held a personal meaning for McCreery.

A relative of one of his band members, U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Andrew Carpenter, had been killed in action during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2011. Carpenter’s wife was pregnant with their first child at the time.

McCreery had spoken about how that story affected the way he understood the song — particularly its message that the life of someone who died serving their country should never be reduced to a name and two dates.

That perspective gave his Memorial Day performance another layer of authenticity.

As McCreery reached the closing moments of “The Dash,” the choir and orchestra surrounded him, building the tribute toward its emotional conclusion.
