10-Year-Old Guitar Prodigy Bay Melnick Virgolino Shreds “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” on AGT — And America Couldn’t Look Away

He may only be 10 years old, but Bay Melnick Virgolino walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage like he had been born to play it.

When the young guitarist launched into “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” during Season 20’s Quarterfinals, the performance quickly turned into one of those unmistakable AGT moments where the size of the performer simply doesn’t match the size of the talent.

There were lights.

There was smoke.

There was a backing band.

There was a huge America’s Got Talent stage waiting for him.

But the moment Bay strapped on his guitar, none of that mattered.

All eyes were on the 10-year-old.

And Bay delivered.

A Little Kid With a Very Big Rock ’n’ Roll Attitude

For the second round of the Season 20 Quarterfinals, Bay took on the iconic “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll,” a song originally written by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker in 1975 for their band, The Arrows.

The song’s most famous incarnation came later, when Joan Jett and the Blackhearts turned it into a massive hit in 1982.

Taking on a song with that kind of rock history would be a serious challenge for any young performer.

Bay didn’t seem intimidated.

Instead, he attacked the performance with confidence, attitude and a guitarist’s instinct that appeared far beyond his years.

During his Auditions appearance, the New York native explained that he was only 5 years old when he became obsessed with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

“I was 5 years old, and I was obsessed with Slash,” Bay explained.

He wanted to learn the instrument, so he asked his mother for lessons.

That early fascination clearly developed into something much bigger.

By the time Bay reached America’s Got Talent, he wasn’t simply a child who had learned a few songs.

He had developed into a confident young musician capable of handling the pressure of one of television’s biggest talent competitions.

And Bay was quick to give credit to the people who helped him get there.

“My mom and my dad, they’re my biggest supporters, they’re kind of like…they’re my roadies,” he joked.

That playful comment offered a glimpse of the personality behind the guitar.

The Performance That First Introduced America to Bay

Before “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll,” Bay had already made an impression during the Auditions.

He performed Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” giving viewers their first major look at the young guitarist’s ability.

But the Quarterfinals performance raised the stakes.

This time, Bay wasn’t simply trying to get through the Auditions.

He was competing for America’s votes.
