Ashford Sanders may spend his days running a restaurant in Mississippi, but his upcoming America’s Got Talent audition suggests music has always been another important part of his life. Ahead of the episode’s broadcast, NBC released a preview showing Sanders delivering a heartfelt performance that left both the audience and judges visibly impressed.

Introducing himself as the owner of Ashford’s Kitchen, Sanders shared a little about his restaurant before stepping onto the stage to perform “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish. His calm demeanor quickly gave way to a confident vocal performance that held the theater’s attention from beginning to end.

Originally written and recorded by Billie Eilish for the 2023 film Barbie, “What Was I Made For?” became one of the singer’s most acclaimed releases. Co-written with her brother and longtime collaborator Finneas, the ballad explores themes of identity, vulnerability and self-discovery through understated production and intimate vocals. Sanders approached the song from a different perspective while respecting its reflective nature. Simon Cowell also offered encouraging feedback, calling Sanders a “gifted” singer with a beautiful tone. He added that Sanders appeared well suited to reinterpreting a wide variety of songs, noting that his personality came across just as naturally as his vocal ability.
