Race Against Time in Maldives Horror: Elite Divers Launch Dangerous Mission to Recover Missing Italians Before Sharks Reach Them — As Rescue Death Raises Toll to Six

A terrifying underwater tragedy in the Maldives has now transformed into a desperate and deadly race against time, as elite rescue divers battle violent conditions to recover four missing Italian tourists feared trapped deep inside a notorious cave system — before marine predators reach them first.

What began as a dream diving expedition in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations has spiraled into a catastrophe investigators are now calling one of the most dangerous recovery operations the region has seen in years.

And the mission is already claiming more lives.

Three highly specialized Finnish cave divers — Sami Paakkarinen, Jenni Westerlund, and Patrik Grönqvist — arrived in the Maldives after being rapidly assembled within 48 hours to assist local authorities. The internationally respected team was deployed by a European diving safety organization after growing fears that ordinary rescue crews simply could not safely navigate the underwater maze where the missing group disappeared.

Their target: the notorious Alimatha cave complex near Vaavu Atoll.

Their challenge: descending hundreds of feet into pitch-black tunnels where even the most experienced divers can quickly become disoriented.

Their nightmare: getting there before nature does.

According to reports, one of the recovered locations is known locally as “Shark Cave,” raising horrifying concerns that the missing victims could be exposed to marine scavengers if recovery efforts continue to stall.

The danger became brutally real over the weekend.

A Maldivian military rescue diver, Sergeant-Major Mohamed Mahudhee, tragically died during the search operation after suffering decompression illness, immediately forcing authorities to suspend parts of the mission. His death pushed the tragedy’s toll to six and underscored the extreme risks rescue crews now face.

So far, authorities have recovered only one body — Federico Gualtieri — from roughly 60 meters beneath the surface inside a cave chamber investigators believe may contain the rest of the group.

Officials fear the others remain deeper within a cave system stretching around 200 feet in length — a twisting labyrinth descending into total darkness.

The victims included veteran marine biologist Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researcher Muriel Oddenino, and boat captain Gianluca Benedetti — all part of what was described as a university-linked research expedition.

But as the recovery operation intensifies, troubling questions are beginning to emerge.

Reports now suggest the yacht used for the dive expedition may not have possessed authorization for dives exceeding 100 feet. Former military diver Shafraz Naeem has publicly alleged that safety rules were ignored, claiming the dive descended far beyond approved recreational limits.

According to Naeem, the entrance to the cave itself lies between approximately 180 and 190 feet beneath the surface — nearly double the permitted threshold — before plunging even deeper into branching tunnels where visibility disappears entirely.

In environments like that, experts warn, even a tiny mistake can become fatal.

Now investigators face a growing list of questions: Were warning signs missed? Were protocols ignored? And could this horrifying chain of events have been prevented?

So far, only one of the five Italian divers, Federico Gualtieri, has been recovered on Friday, Maldivian authorities confirmed.

They said: “The body was recovered from about 60 metres deep from inside a cave structure.

“It is assumed that the rest of the divers would also be inside this cave which is about 200ft in length.”

But for the divers descending once again into the darkness, only one mission matters now: bring them home.
