Dolly Parton Gave the World Songs Everyone Knows — But Her Quietest Legacy Was Delivered One Book at a Time, and Millions of Children Are Living Proof That Her Greatest Impact May Have Happened Far From Nashville

Dolly Parton’s Legacy Reaches Far Beyond Music: How Her Imagination Library Put Millions of Books Into Children’s Hands

Through The Imagination Library, Dolly Parton Leaves An Enduring Legacy That Goes Beyond Country Music

Dolly Parton built a career filled with unforgettable songs, films and achievements, but one of the accomplishments closest to her heart had little to do with the stage.

Following Parton’s death at age 80 on Tuesday, August 25, attention has returned to an extraordinary part of her legacy: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the literacy program she founded to place free books directly into the hands of young children.

What began as a local initiative in East Tennessee ultimately grew far beyond her hometown, reaching families across the United States and internationally.

For Parton, however, the mission was always deeply personal.

A dream inspired by her father

The roots of the Imagination Library can be traced to Parton’s childhood and, particularly, her relationship with her father, Robert Lee Parton.

“I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my daddy,” Parton explained in a 2024 video statement.

Although she considered her father one of the wisest men she had ever known, he could not read. Parton believed that limitation may have prevented him from realizing some of his own ambitions.

“I knew in my heart, this inability to read probably kept him from seeing all his dreams come true,” she said.

That experience helped turn literacy into a personal mission.

“If you can read, you can teach yourself anything,” Parton explained.

From helping one community to reaching millions

Parton’s efforts to support children in her home region began before the Imagination Library.

In 1988, she established the Dollywood Foundation to support Sevier County, Tennessee, where she grew up.

Among its early initiatives was the “Buddy Program.” Parton promised seventh- and eighth-grade students in Sevier County that they would each receive $500 if they successfully graduated from high school.

According to the Imagination Library, the program helped reduce the local dropout rate by 29 percentage points, from 35% to 6%.

Then, in 1995, Parton launched the Imagination Library in Sevier County.

Its concept was remarkably straightforward: provide books to families with children under five, helping youngsters develop a relationship with reading from their earliest years.

Five years later, in 2000 — the same year her father died — the program began expanding nationally.

With the help of community partners, its reach continued growing, eventually extending beyond the United States.

200 million books — and counting

The scale of what began in Parton’s East Tennessee community eventually became staggering.

In 2023, the Imagination Library distributed its 200 millionth book.

By 2024, the organization said one in seven children in the United States participated in the program, receiving free books through the mail every month.

Those numbers illustrate the extraordinary reach of an idea born from something intensely personal: a daughter’s memories of her father and her belief that literacy could unlock opportunities he had never been given.

Parton once imagined what those books could mean for children whose dreams were only beginning.

“They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister,” she said. “Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer.”

For Parton, books were where those possibilities could begin.

“The seeds of these dreams are often found in books,” she said, “and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.”

A legacy that lives beyond the stage

Parton’s philanthropy earned recognition alongside the honors she received for her music and entertainment career, including an honorary Academy Award recognizing her charitable work.

Yet the Imagination Library stands apart because its impact was never dependent on whether someone knew “Jolene,” watched one of her films or visited Dollywood.

It was designed simply to give children books — and through those books, opportunities to learn, imagine and dream.

Parton once summed up that vision with an idea that now carries even greater significance:

“Imagine a world where every child, regardless of their background, was surrounded with books, stories, and a love for reading.”

For millions of children, Dolly Parton spent decades trying to make that world a reality.
