Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast Surpasses John Wick at the Box Office Despite a Major Financial Challenge
Brad Pitt’s survival thriller Heart of the Beast has reached a notable box-office milestone, overtaking the original John Wick in worldwide earnings. The achievement is particularly striking for a film that spent nearly nine years in development before finally reaching cinemas, although its substantial production budget means its commercial journey is far from over.
The film has attracted strong audience support and positive attention for Pitt’s performance. However, while its global gross has moved beyond that of Keanu Reeves’ breakout action thriller, the comparison between the two films reveals very different financial realities.

Heart of the Beast Outgrosses the Original John Wick
As of October 14, 2026, Heart of the Beast had earned approximately $133 million worldwide, comfortably exceeding the original John Wick’s lifetime theatrical gross of $86 million.
For Pitt, the result adds another successful title to a career filled with major commercial releases. His highest-grossing film remains F1, which generated $634 million globally. Other leading performers include World War Z with $540 million, Troy with $494 million, Mr. & Mrs. Smith with $487 million and Ocean’s Eleven with $450 million.
Although Heart of the Beast has not reached the top 20 highest-grossing films of Pitt’s career, it has nevertheless outperformed several other releases, including Digger, Primetime and Practical Magic 2.
Its box-office total also places it ahead of the first John Wick, a film that went on to become the foundation of a major action franchise.

How John Wick Turned a Risky Production Into a Franchise
Despite its lower theatrical earnings, John Wick had a significant advantage when it came to production costs.
Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, the original film was made on a comparatively modest budget of $20 million. The project faced considerable uncertainty before release, with major Hollywood studios passing on the script before it eventually found a home at Lionsgate.
Keeping the production moving also required substantial personal commitments from the people involved. Stahelski and Leitch invested their own money, while Reeves accepted a pay cut and contributed financially. Producer Basil Iwanyk reportedly maxed out personal credit cards to help keep the film afloat.
Actress Eva Longoria provided a crucial boost near the end of production with a $6 million investment.
The gamble ultimately paid off. John Wick earned more than four times its production budget and developed into a billion-dollar franchise, expanding to include three sequels and a spin-off. Its success demonstrated how a relatively inexpensive action film could grow into a valuable property with lasting commercial appeal.
Heart of the Beast Still Has a Long Way to Go

Unlike John Wick, Heart of the Beast was produced through a partnership involving several companies, with Paramount Pictures leading the project. That backing helped support a much larger production budget of $82 million.
Despite reaching $133 million in worldwide ticket sales, the film has yet to recover its production costs, according to the report. Its box-office performance has been supported largely by international audiences, and its eventual profitability will depend on how much revenue remains after cinemas and other distribution partners take their shares, alongside marketing and additional expenses.
That distinction is important when comparing the two films. A larger worldwide gross does not automatically translate into a more profitable release, particularly when one production costs several times as much as the other.
After more than three weeks in cinemas, Heart of the Beast has shown encouraging staying power, but it remains some distance from the financial position it needs to reach. Its final commercial outcome will become clearer as its theatrical run continues.
Strong Audience Support Could Help the Film Find Its Place

The film’s long-term reputation is still taking shape, and it remains too early to know whether it will eventually be regarded as one of Pitt’s standout performances. Nevertheless, early audience feedback has been encouraging: Heart of the Beast has received a 94% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Pitt has also spoken about the physical demands of making the film. In an interview with Collider, he described it as the most physically challenging movie of his career. He said the strength of the screenplay helped keep him committed to the production despite those demands.
At the heart of the story is the enduring bond between a man and his dog, a relationship that also plays a central role in the original John Wick. While the two films approach that emotional connection through different genres and storytelling styles, it offers a meaningful point of comparison between Pitt’s survival drama and Reeves’ revenge thriller.
For now, Heart of the Beast has secured a notable box-office achievement and earned strong audience approval. Whether it can turn that momentum into a profitable theatrical run—and ultimately establish itself among Pitt’s most memorable films—remains the bigger question.
