“DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW The Pitt? THIS CHARACTER COULD TURN EVERYTHING AROUND…” While audiences are still debating the shocks of Season 2, a name quietly steps out of its comfort zone — Ken Kirby as Dr. John Shen. Not flashy. Not the center of attention. But it is precisely this “quiet” character that is making fans begin to wonder: Is he the show’s hidden trump card? From an actor who once “hustle” every ticket for his solo show, to breaking into hit series like Dynasty and The Gifted… Kirby’s journey has been anything but simple — and perhaps that’s why his character has such a different feel. Meanwhile, the talk about the late-night spin-off hasn’t died down… But the truth is: not everyone is chosen to move on. So who exactly is Dr. Shen — and why could he be the most dangerous “mystery factor” for the next season?

The Canadian actor – who grew up between Vancouver, Hong Kong and Shanghai – has TV credits including Dynasty, The Gifted and Good Trouble

It has been less than a week since the second season of HBO Max’s hit medical drama The Pitt concluded, and fans are already looking forward to the show’s return.

Noah Wyle, who executive produces the Emmy-winning show and stars in it as Dr Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, revealed in an interview with People that the upcoming instalment may see medical staff at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s emergency room clocking in in late autumn. As Wyle explained, it’s important to “give a little bit of difference of season because that sometimes gives you more variety of cases”.
As for fans demanding a spin-off focused on the night shift run by Dr Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) – alongside Drs Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris), Crus Henderson (Luke Tennie) and John Shen (Ken Kirby) – Wyle told Deadline, “Anything is possible, but it’s not probable.”

The Pitt season three is slated for release in January 2027. Until then, here’s what to know about the actor who plays Dr Shen.

Describing his upbringing to Character magazine, Kirby remarked wryly, “Traditional Asian parents never really chill out.” Feeling the pressure at home to pursue a “safer career”, he studied business at college.

In 2010, his one-man show at the Vancouver Comedy Festival drew an audience of more than 1,000. “The truth is, I went around town selling the show and hustling to sell tickets, and people showed up!” he told Character.

He later joined the improv and sketch comedy troupes Upright Citizens Brigade and The Groundlings, and got into acting.

He’s a multihyphenate

Kirby is best known for appearing in shows like Good TroubleDynasty and The Gifted. However, his career isn’t limited to acting. He wrote and produced the 2016 TV short Made in China, and co-wrote the 2025 film Abduct. He also served as an associate producer on the 2021 short Good News.

Regarding his versatile creative pursuits, Kirby told Character, “If there is a tree, you just want to work every branch possible. You have to grow as many branches as you can. Before you know it, you are on top of the tree.”
