Princess Eugenie has finally revealed her newborn daughter’s name — and hidden within it is a deeply emotional tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. After keeping the name private for two weeks, Eugenie explained that she and Jack Brooksbank chose three names inspired by people they “love and admire past and present.” The carefully chosen combination also carries links to English and Portuguese history, reflecting the two countries the family now calls home. But one part of the name remains particularly intriguing, with its exact inspiration still not officially confirmed.

Princess Eugenie Reveals Baby Daughter’s Name With Touching Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Eugenie has revealed the name of her newborn daughter, choosing a deeply personal combination that honours family ties while reflecting the couple’s connections to both Britain and Portugal.

The royal announced on Monday that her third child with husband Jack Brooksbank is named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.

Born on 3 August at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, the baby girl is a younger sister to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023.

Explaining the choice on Instagram, Eugenie said her daughter had been “named after three people we love and admire past and present”.

Among them is Adelaide’s late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, whom Eugenie said the family continues to “hold close in our hearts”.

“Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home,” the Princess added.

The history behind Adelaide’s name

The baby’s first name carries a connection to British royal history.

Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen became Queen of the United Kingdom and Hanover through her marriage to King William IV. She held that position from 1830 until 1837.

The inspiration behind the name Annina has not been officially confirmed.

Eugenie is, however, friends with Bavarian costume designer Countess Annina Bruges von Pfuel. The Princess attended her 2024 wedding to fellow aristocrat Caspar von Veltheim, although no confirmation has been given that Adelaide’s second middle name is a tribute to her.

Elizabeth carries a clearer family significance, providing a direct nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Two weeks of “special, cosy and love-filled” family life

Eugenie also offered a glimpse into the family’s first fortnight with their newest arrival.

Reflecting on the period since Adelaide’s birth, she described it as “the most special, cosy and love-filled time”.

Her sons have apparently embraced the arrival of their younger sister enthusiastically.

Referring affectionately to August and Ernest as “Augie and Ernie”, Eugenie said they are “already the best big brothers”.

The couple had initially announced their daughter’s arrival earlier in August without revealing her name.

“Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!!” Eugenie wrote at the time, adding: “We are beyond in love with our girlie.”

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the newborn weighed 6lb 9oz at birth.

Baby Adelaide’s place in the line of succession

Adelaide’s arrival has also changed the order of succession to the British throne.

She is now 15th in line, immediately behind her older brothers.

Her birth pushed her great-uncle Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, down one position to 16th.

Adelaide is also the 15th great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, and Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York.

Despite her royal connections and position in the succession, Adelaide will not hold the style of HRH.

A rare overseas royal birth

Another unusual aspect of Adelaide’s arrival is where she was born.

While births within the British Royal Family have traditionally taken place in the UK, Eugenie welcomed her daughter in Lisbon.

The location reflects the family’s increasingly close connection to Portugal.

Eugenie and Jack have a home in the country and divide their time between Portugal and the UK, making their daughter’s birthplace particularly meaningful alongside Eugenie’s explanation that the chosen name represents the two places the family loves and calls home.

Eugenie and Jack’s growing family

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have three children

Eugenie and Jack married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in 2018.

They welcomed August in London three years later, followed by Ernest in 2023.

Now a family of five, their newest arrival adds another generation-spanning name to the Brooksbank family.

From its connection to Queen Adelaide to its tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and the still-unconfirmed inspiration behind Annina, the name brings together royal history, family affection and the couple’s life between Britain and Portugal.

And for Eugenie, the meaning appears to be deeply personal: three names honouring people she and Jack “love and admire”, chosen for a daughter whose first two weeks have already brought what she described as an especially warm and loving new chapter for their family.
