THREE VOICES. ONE FAMILY. AND AN ENTIRE AGT THEATER FELL SILENT TO LISTEN. A father-and-two-sons trio from Michigan seemed to have the perfect AGT audition after earning a standing ovation with their breathtaking harmonies on “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Mel B called their vocals “perfection,” and Sofía Vergara said America would fall in love with them. But just when it looked like the family band had won over every judge, Simon Cowell delivered one unexpected critique: “That was a very safe audition.”

Simon Cowell Calls ‘AGT’ Country Trio Audition “Very Safe”The Sound auditions for 'America's Got Talent' 2026

America’s Got Talent returns to NBC on Tuesday, July 21 for their seventh set of auditions. Among the auditioning contestants is a band comprised of a dad and his two sons.

The Sound Country Band Impresses Both Acapella, With Instruments

The country trio, who goes by the name “The Sound,” hails from Romeo, Michigan. The group has been together for quite some time, the men even admitted they began playing with their father when they were young.

At the beginning of their performance, they asked audience members to begin clapping a beat. They then began singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver acapella.

After showing off their harmonies, the group began playing their instruments. Throughout the performance, audience members were heard roaring for the country trio.

The audience then gave this family band a standing ovation. Both Mel B and Sofia Vergara prematurely stood up, thinking the song was over, but the group wanted to hit the song acapella one more time.

Simon Cowell Tells Group They Played Audition Safe

Mel B was the first of the judges to talk to the group, asking the dad if he purposely gave himself the coolest instrument out of the group. He smiled and laughed, agreeing with Mel B on the “coolness” of the bass guitar.

“Listen, I’m not really that big of a fan of country music, but this made me so happy,” Mel B said. “Your harmonies were just perfection!”

Howie Mandel then commented on their false ending to their song, joking about how even the crew thought the song was over so they were trying to pack up the equipment. Vergara called this audition “perfect” saying America would fall in love with The Sound.

“Everyone’s going to like you. I mean how could you not?” Simon Cowell said. “I mean look, being honest, that was obviously a very safe, nice audition. That’s the riskiest thing you could do.”

Cowell continued saying that if The Sound makes it to the next round of the competition, they should “sing a song which you kind of make into a country song.”

“Going forward, we have to go beyond safe,” Cowell said.
