Consider me impressed.
This weekend, Riley Green will make his acting debut on the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals this coming Sunday, April 19th, where he will appear alongside Luke Grimes, who plays star Kayce Dutton, as Kayce takes on a new role as a U.S. marshal in Montana following the death of his wife, Monica. Riley will appear in multiple episodes, playing a former Navy SEAL named Garrett, who arrives at the ranch, unexpectedly, hoping to lean on his friends Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) to help “put the demons of his past to rest.”
And this week, fans got their first official look at the kind of actor Riley is, as Marshals shared a clip teasing his first episode, where we see him appear at Kayce’s ranch, saying he just wanted to see an old Team’s buddy, though not everyone is convinced he has pure intentions:
And we have another where Riley and Luke, as Garrett and Cal, have a conversation about how Garrett left the teams and Kayce hasn’t seen him in ten years. They allude to some darker times, and Riley recently said that Garrett deals with “extreme PTSD,” so I’m sure we’ll learn more about all of that as the episodes unfold.
Garrett also notes during the conversation that Cal “ended” his career after Kayce notes that Cal is the reason he became a marshal, so that seems like it will be a big part of the storyline for him, as well. Riley has also spoken about how difficult it was to start his acting career with a role that is so emotionally complex, and I think a lot of fans were wondering how he would do with such a difficult character.
CBS executives did actually make him audition, so he passed their test, making it unlikely he would completely flop in this role… I certainly don’t think anyone expected that, but I can’t imagine it’s easy to do this at all, especially on such a popular show, and Riley seems to have some real acting chops, as Luke Grimes has talked about before.
So many of us are used to seeing him on stage singing, where he is completely himself, so it is just a little odd to see him as someone else, but he did a great job here and I’m really excited to see the rest of the episodes he’s in. Riley will also perform his song “My Way” at some point this season, which he’s releasing this Friday.
Marshals also shared a clip of several of Riley’s scenes, which you can watch here:
