Kenny Chesney and Eric Church gave No Shoes Nation an unforgettable surprise Friday (June 19) when the country superstars shared the stage during the kickoff of the second leg of Chesney’s highly anticipated Las Vegas residency at Sphere.

Chesney was in the midst of his 27-song headlining set when he stunned the sold-out crowd by welcoming surprise guest Eric Church to the stage. As Church emerged, jaws dropped throughout the venue and the sold-out crowd of thousands of fans erupted into thunderous applause and near-deafening screams.

“I got to tell you we couldn’t have an opening weekend at the Sphere without being surprised…And we were all surprised today too. I got to tell you, the longer that you’re in this business and that you’re on stage and that you travel down the highway… they say the older that you get, the less friends that you have. And I can tell you that I have a lot of friends still. I really do. But one of those friends just happens to be when he’s an amazing human being. We toured together several years ago and he shows up, comes all the way across the country to show up for the first night in Las Vegas. Will you please make welcome to stage Eric Church,” Chesney said, welcoming Church to the Sphere stage.

The country music icons teamed up for a three-song performance that included Chesney’s nostalgic fan favorite, “When I See This Bar,” and two of Church’s signature anthems, “Drink In My Hand” and “Springsteen.”

Chesney and Church began by reflecting on their friendship and several moments the pair shared over the years with the most recent being Church filling in for a sick artist at the last minute to pay tribute to Chesney at his Country Music Hall of Fame induction in the fall of 2025.

“We toured together in 2013, we toured together again in 2015. We played Sloppy Joes down in Key West and he flew down and showed up. Look, this is no lie. Not to bring it up, but I’m going to bring it up because it just shows how good a friend Eric Church is. Last October, I was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. There was someone that was supposed to sing for me that night. They canceled the day before because they were sick. Eric Church was on vacation in Florida with his family and flew to Nashville to sing for me. So I want to thank you on my brother. That is a friend. Standing here tonight is a friend. I just want you to know I love you. My band loves you. My audience loves you. Thank you for being here.”

The pair of country superstars then went on to perform Chesney’s “When I See This Bar” before Chesney asked Church if he wanted to do a couple more of his own songs alongside him on the Sphere stage which they then took on “Drink In My Hand” which prompted a massive sing-along with the sold-out crowd.

The final song Chesney and Church performed together was “Springsteen,” during which Church stopped and admitted he forgot the lyrics to the song, which is also one of his signature hits. Chesney comforted him by recalling a story about forgetting the words to one of his own hits during his Las Vegas residency a few years ago.

“It’s always good. It’s always good to forget your biggest hit,” Church admitted as the band continued to play the song’s instrumental. Chesney then chimed in and shared, “Several years ago we were actually in Vegas and I forgot one of my songs… I don’t want to embarass myself [and tell you what song it was], but this girl had her phone up. She gave me her phone that had lyrics of that song on her phone. I sat there and sang my song [reading the lyrics off the phone]. Anybody got Eric’s lyrics on their phone?”

Church then told Chesney that they should “at least try it again.” Chesney grabbed a fan’s phone from the front row that had the lyrics to the Church classic on it, but he didn’t end up needing it, as Church recovered like the true entertainer he is and powered through the performance. The crowd immediately joined in, scream-singing the chart-topping anthem alongside him.

He ended the performance with Church changing the lyrics from “Like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night, Springsteen” to “like a soundtrack to a Kenny Chesney No Shoes Nation Friday night, Springsteen.” Concluding the performance with a roaring sing-along to the final lyrics of the song, “Whoa-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh.”
