The Sound – Country Music Trio Leaves AGT Audience Speechless with “Take Me Home, Country Roads”

With just three vocalists, a bass, a guitar, and a strong family spirit, The Sound delivered one of the most emotionally charged performances of the America’s Got Talent 2026 Auditions. Their raw rendition of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” not only had the audience clapping along to the beat but also received standing ovation.

Hailing from Romeo, Michigan, The Sound is a trio consisting of father Rob Mills and his two sons, Levi and Jacob Mills. Music has been a part of their family since a young age. Rob grew up in western North Carolina, where bluegrass and country music were an integral part of his childhood. When they were young, Levi and Jacob stumbled upon their father’s collection of old country music cassette tapes. From those tapes, the two brothers became fascinated with classic country melodies and played music with their father every day.

Alongside music, faith is also a crucial foundation in the Mills family. Rob used to work at a local church, so Levi and Jacob grew up surrounded by hymns. The three of them always shared that faith was their greatest motivation in pursuing their artistic careers. This was evident in their debut Christian Country-Pop album, which won the Dove Award, a prestigious award in contemporary Christian music.

However, the real turning point came from… a hotel staircase.

In May 2025, The Sound began posting short videos of themselves singing classic Country songs on hotel staircases – where the natural echo effect highlighted the harmonious blend of their voices. Initially just a form of entertainment during touring, the videos quickly went viral on social media. In just a few months, the video series surpassed 100 million views, helping the group attract over 750,000 new followers before the end of 2025.

This popularity propelled them to the America’s Got Talent 2026 stage.

In their early YouTube broadcast, The Sound opened “Take Me Home, Country Roads” entirely a cappella, requiring the audience to clap along to the rhythm. When the three-voice harmony began, the entire auditorium fell silent to listen before erupting in cheers. The group then transitioned to instrumental accompaniment, concluding with an emotional a cappella harmony that brought many to their feet before the song ended.

The judges also offered high praise. Mel B called their harmony “perfection,” while Sofía Vergara believed America would love the trio. Simon Cowell, however, offered a more candid assessment. He considered it a “very safe” performance, and encouraged the group to try reinventing a song in their own style if they continued in the competition to make a stronger impression.

Nevertheless, with their sincerity, rare harmonious voices, and inspiring family story, The Sound proved that sometimes what touches the audience’s hearts isn’t elaborate performances, but three family members standing together, singing melodies that remind everyone of the place they call home.
