An acclaimed Scottish detective drama starring Nicola Walker has been given another opportunity to find an audience, with both seasons of Annika now available on Netflix.

The series, which blends murder mysteries with black comedy and an unusual fourth-wall-breaking style, consists of 12 episodes across two seasons. Walker leads the cast alongside Doctor Who stars Paul McGann and Varada Sethu.

Although the show will not return for a third season, its arrival on Netflix gives viewers who missed its previous runs on U&Alibi and BBC One another chance to discover a crime series that earned considerable praise from critics.

‘Annika’ Puts an Unusual Spin on the Detective Drama

Walker stars as DI Annika Strandhed, a detective whose approach immediately separates the series from more conventional police procedurals.

Alongside investigating crimes, Annika frequently references her Norwegian heritage and speaks directly to viewers, breaking the fourth wall and effectively bringing the audience into her confidence.

That storytelling device helps give the series its distinctive combination of crime drama and dark comedy, with Walker’s dry delivery playing a major part in its appeal.

The Herald Scotland acknowledged that speaking directly to viewers is a technique that can quickly become tiresome in the wrong hands, but argued that Walker makes it work.

“Breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to viewers… is a device that can get old quickly, but it’s Nicola Walker for goodness sake. Who wouldn’t want to be on the other end of her wry asides?” the publication wrote, adding that Annika would “stand out in a crowded market”.

Critics Found Plenty to Praise

The series originally premiered on U&Alibi in 2021 before eventually reaching a broader audience on BBC One.

Its second season later aired on the BBC, but despite the positive critical reception, it was subsequently confirmed that there were no plans for a third season.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season currently does not have a critics’ score, while season two holds an 83% approval rating based on six reviews.

Collider felt the show improved during its second outing, writing that “Annika manages to step up its game in season two, battening down the hatches with fresh, improved scripts”.

The New York Times, meanwhile, highlighted Walker’s performance and praised her “ability to flesh out the emotions lurking beneath self-consciousness and awkwardness”.

The Times also found strengths in the character relationships, particularly the connection between Annika Strandhed and her colleague DS Michael McAndrews.

“The plot was looser than old knicker elastic, but what is strong about this series is the dynamic between Strandhed and her colleague DS Michael McAndrews,” the publication wrote.

Despite the favorable reviews, viewers should not currently expect the Netflix arrival to lead directly into new episodes.

When news emerged that Annika would not continue, broadcaster UKTV confirmed that there were no plans for another season.

“We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U&Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third [season],” a spokesperson said.

That means the existing 12 episodes form the complete television run for now.

Netflix Gives the Series Another Chance to Find Viewers

Annika Season 1 Episode 2 Review

Annika has already experienced an unusual journey between broadcasters.

After debuting on U&Alibi, it later reached BBC One and BBC iPlayer, exposing the series to another audience. Its addition to Netflix effectively gives the show a third opportunity to reach viewers who may have overlooked it during either of its previous runs.

For fans of Nicola Walker, it also offers another showcase for the actress whose understated performances have become a defining feature of British television drama.

The combination of Scottish settings, murder investigations, dark humor and Annika’s habit of speaking directly to the audience gives the series an identity noticeably different from the crowded field of British detective shows.

And while its cancellation means viewers can binge the entire story without a third season waiting at the end, the move to Netflix could introduce Walker’s unconventional detective to an entirely new audience.

Annika is available to stream on Netflix, with all 12 episodes across both seasons. Both seasons are also available on BBC iPlayer.
