New Details Emerge About Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s UK Return as Archie and Lilibet Prepare for British School

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing for their most significant change since leaving royal life six years ago, with new details emerging about how their return to Britain could work — and what it will mean for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Multiple reports say the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning an extended return to the UK before the end of August, with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, enrolled to begin school in Britain in September. The family is expected to establish themselves at a private, non-royal residence outside London.

But despite the significance of the move, this is not a return to the arrangement Harry and Meghan left behind in 2020.

They are expected to remain non-working royals, retain their home in Montecito and continue pursuing their private commercial and charitable projects. The precise length of their stay in Britain also remains unclear.

Archie and Lilibet are at the center of the move

Perhaps the clearest sign that this is more than a short visit is the decision involving the Sussex children.

Archie and Lilibet are expected to begin attending school in Britain in September, introducing a major new element into a childhood that has until now been centered primarily in California.

For Harry, the move would also give his children a stronger connection to the country where he grew up and potentially more opportunities to spend time with their British relatives.

A source told People that Harry had “never really stopped missing home,” while the publication reported that the family wants Archie and Lilibet to experience both their American and British backgrounds.

The couple are nevertheless expected to keep their Montecito property, suggesting that Britain may become another important family base rather than an outright replacement for California. Reports also indicate that they will retain their property in Portugal.

No return to working royal life

The Sussexes’ arrival should not be confused with a restoration of their former positions within the monarchy.

Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 before eventually settling in California. Their new British chapter is not expected to reverse that decision.

King Charles was reportedly informed about the family’s plans shortly before they became public and is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more time with Harry, Meghan and his grandchildren privately. Prince William and Catherine were also reportedly informed.

There is no indication, however, that Harry and Meghan will receive a new “half-in, half-out” royal arrangement allowing them to combine private commercial careers with official royal duties.

That distinction could prove important as the Sussexes settle back into Britain.

They may once again be geographically closer to the Royal Family, but institutionally they remain outside its working structure.

Living in the same country could naturally create more opportunities for private family contact.

Harry has previously spoken openly about wanting reconciliation with his family, telling the BBC in 2025 that he no longer saw any value in continuing their disputes.

His relationship with Prince William remains a much more difficult question.

Reports continue to describe the brothers as estranged, and there has been no confirmed breakthrough between them accompanying news of Harry’s return.

So while the move could help Harry rebuild his relationship with Charles, it does not automatically signal a wider royal reconciliation.

Meghan’s professional future has also attracted renewed attention just as the family prepares to return.

The Duchess has been linked with a possible role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen. Initial reports described preliminary discussions rather than a completed casting deal.

The situation has since produced conflicting reports, but the latest reporting from Variety says Meghan’s potential involvement remains possible.

If a deal ultimately materializes, it would add a striking professional dimension to Meghan’s return to Britain, where she became a member of the Royal Family after marrying Harry in 2018.

For now, however, any specific role should still be treated as unconfirmed.

Harry steps away from African Parks board

Another change has arrived simultaneously in Harry’s professional life.

African Parks announced that Harry will leave its board after a decade of involvement with the conservation organization. He previously served as its president before becoming a board member in 2023.

His departure comes as part of what the organization describes as a governance refresh.

African Parks has faced sustained scrutiny over allegations of human-rights abuses involving rangers in areas it manages. Harry’s departure follows calls from Indigenous-rights organization Survival International for him to step down, although African Parks framed the change as part of its wider board transition.

Security remains one of the biggest unresolved issues
