“What is this?” she hissed.

“Three separate lab results,” I said, my voice steady even as my hands shook. “All confirming the same thing. Lily is Richard’s biological daughter. 99.99% match.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

The little boy Margaret had paraded in front of everyone an hour earlier—Toby, the supposed “secret heir” she claimed Richard had fathered with a dead mistress—stood by the punch bowl, confused.

His mother, Lena, the quiet “nanny” Margaret had brought into the mansion six months prior, went white as a sheet.

“You forged this,” Margaret spat. “You paid someone to fake it, you gold-digging little whore.”

I stepped closer.

I made sure every single person in that marble foyer could hear me.

“Richard died six months ago. You told everyone his will left everything to the ‘verified Hale heir.’ You spent seven years telling the world I cheated on him. That Lily was some random man’s kid. You faked the first DNA test the day she was born, didn’t you?”

Margaret’s mouth opened and closed.

No sound came out.

“You told the doctors there was a mix-up at the hospital,” I said. “You swapped the samples. So the results came back negative. And everyone believed you. Because you’re Margaret Hale. The matriarch. The woman who built this empire from nothing after her husband died.”

I gestured to Lily, still huddled on the concrete step, the rusted chain around her ankle glinting in the porch light.

“You chained my seven-year-old daughter outside like a dog. To make a point. To prove you were in charge. Well, look at the second page, Margaret.”

She flipped the paper.

Her knees buckled.

A man I recognized—Richard’s older brother, Henry, the only person in the family who’d ever been halfway decent to me—stepped forward and picked up the page that had fluttered to the floor.

He read it out loud.

“Toby James Carter. Maternal DNA match to Margaret Anne Hale. Confirmed first-degree biological relation. Probability: 99.97%.”

The room erupted.

Lena let out a small, broken sob.

Toby tugged on her skirt.

“Mommy, what’s he talking about?”

I looked right at Margaret.

“Lena isn’t some random nanny you found on Craigslist, is she? She’s the daughter you gave up for adoption when you were 19. The daughter you spent 40 years pretending never existed. You tracked her down two years ago. Found out she had a son the exact same age as Lily. And you came up with a plan, didn’t you?”

Margaret said nothing.

Her hand was pressed to her chest like she was about to have a heart attack.

“Fake Lily’s DNA,” I said, counting off on my fingers. “Make everyone think she’s not Richard’s. Bring in Toby. Claim he’s Richard’s secret love child. Name him the sole heir. Transfer every last dollar of Richard’s billion-dollar fortune into your control. And Lena would get to be the daughter you always wanted. The one who gave you a proper grandson. Not a weak little girl who liked butterflies and coloring books instead of stocks and board meetings.”

Henry stared at Margaret, horrified.

“Is any of this true, Mom?”

She didn’t answer him.

She looked at me.

Pure, unadulterated hatred burned in her eyes.

“You think this changes anything?” she whispered, so only I could hear. “You think a few pieces of paper will take this family from me? I built it. I own it. And I will destroy you before I let a little girl and a nobody like you get your hands on it.”

I didn’t flinch.

I turned and knelt in front of Lily.

I fumbled with the lock on the chain until my fingers bled.

Finally, it snapped open.

I picked her up.

She buried her face in my neck, her small body shaking.

“Can we go home now, Mommy?” she mumbled.

“Right now, baby,” I said.

I carried her out of the mansion.

Past all the staring faces.

Past Lena, who was crying into her hands.

Past Henry, who was still holding the DNA papers like they were on fire.

I didn’t look back at Margaret.

I didn’t need to.
