The 1% Club Book Puzzle Looks Like Simple Addition — But The Obvious Answer Is Completely Wrong
This deceptively simple bookshelf question has exactly the sort of twist that can make you doubt an answer you were certain about seconds earlier
Some The 1% Club questions leave you staring at a screen full of strange symbols or complicated number sequences.
This one gives you three cookery books.

Which somehow makes it even worse.
At first glance, the challenge appears to be a straightforward measurement problem involving three identical books lined up neatly beside one another on a shelf.
There are no obscure facts to remember, no advanced equations to solve and seemingly nowhere for the question to hide a trick.
And yet there’s one crucial detail that can send you completely in the wrong direction.

The question reads:
“In the image below, three volumes of a cookery book series are lined up in order, next to each other on a shelf. The total thickness of the pages of each volume is 5cm and each cover is 5mm thick. What is the distance in centimetres between the first page of volume one and the last page of volume three?”
Before reading any further, have a go yourself.
You know each book contains 5cm of pages, while every individual cover measures 5mm, or 0.5cm.
Three books are sitting side by side.
So how far is it from the first page of volume one to the last page of volume three?
It is extremely tempting to start adding up the thickness of all three books.
After all, each volume consists of 5cm of pages plus two 0.5cm covers, making every complete book 6cm thick.
Three books would therefore span 18cm.
Problem solved?
Not quite.

The bookshelf is doing all the work
The key isn’t really the arithmetic.
It’s working out where those two pages physically sit when the books are standing on the shelf.
Imagine pulling volume one out and opening it normally.
Its first page sits immediately behind its front cover.
Because the books are arranged in numerical order on the shelf, that first page is actually on the side of volume one closest to volume two.
Now consider volume three.
Its last page sits immediately before its back cover.
That means the last page of volume three is also on the side closest to volume two.
Suddenly, you don’t need to travel through all the pages of volume one or all the pages of volume three.
The distance between the two pages consists only of:
the front cover of volume one + the entirety of volume two + the back cover of volume three.
And now the maths becomes much easier.
Volume one’s cover is 0.5cm.
Volume two measures 6cm in total — 5cm of pages plus two 0.5cm covers.
Volume three’s relevant cover adds another 0.5cm.
So:
0.5cm + 6cm + 0.5cm = 7cm.

The answer is 7cm
That’s what makes this such a nasty little The 1% Club-style puzzle.
Nothing in the question is hidden.
The measurements are straightforward and the arithmetic required is elementary.
The difficulty comes from the mental picture most of us automatically create when we hear “first page of volume one” and “last page of volume three”.
Your brain wants those pages to sit at opposite ends of the three-book row.
They don’t.
And if you went straight for 18cm, you fell into exactly the trap the puzzle was designed to set.
The answer feels frustratingly obvious once the books are visualised correctly — but spotting that before seeing the explanation is an entirely different challenge.
