Woman covers her face after missing simple mistake in The 1% Club question

A contestant on ITV’s The 1% Club was left hiding her face in embarrassment after overlooking the answer to one of the show’s deceptively simple questions.

Mo became stuck on a question that appeared to be about a sequence of numbers, but the real clue was hiding in plain sight. Even after host Lee Mack offered several hints, she still struggled to spot it.

Can you find the mistake?

For anyone unfamiliar with The 1% Club, the ITV quiz brings together 100 contestants who face a series of questions that become progressively harder.

Unlike traditional general-knowledge quizzes, many of the questions are designed to test logic, observation and the ability to look at a problem from a different angle.

Contestants try to survive each round and make it through to the final, where they have the chance to win as much as £100,000.

One such question left Mo completely stumped. It read:

“Can you find the the mistake? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.”

At first glance, the list of numbers looks like the obvious place to search for something unusual.

But the numbers were a distraction. The actual mistake appeared earlier in the sentence: the word “the” had been written twice.

Mo, however, didn’t spot it.

Can you spot it?

Lee Mack tries to give her a clue

Mack soon asked the contestants whether anyone was struggling with the answer.

“Does anyone not know what the answer is? We won’t mock you – well, we might mock you a little bit,” he joked.

Mo was more than happy to admit that she had no idea what was wrong with the question.

“What’s the problem with this? You’ve just no idea,” Mack asked.

“Absolutely no idea,” she replied.

Rather than immediately revealing the answer, Mack tried to guide her towards it.

He asked Mo to read the question aloud, hoping that hearing the words would make the error easier to notice.

But she read straight through the sentence and completely missed the duplicated “the”.

Mack stopped her before she reached the numbers and encouraged her to try again.

She still didn’t see it.

So he asked her to read it once more, this time more slowly.

That finally did the trick.

The 1% Club contestant Mo was red-faced after failing to get the correct answer.

The penny finally drops

On her third attempt, Mo realised what she had been missing. The mistake wasn’t hidden among the numbers at all. It was sitting in the wording of the question itself.

The realisation left her visibly embarrassed, and she covered her face with her hands as the answer finally sank in.

Mack pointed out that, while she had eventually worked it out, she had taken longer than the time allowed at the end of the game.

“The good news is, you got there in the end. The bad news is, that definitely took you more than thirty seconds, which is what the rules are for the end of the game and I won’t be able to help you like that on every one of them,” he said.

Thankfully, Mo appeared to take the moment in good humour. She could be seen laughing behind her hands after realising that the answer had been right in front of her all along.

It was a perfect example of how The 1% Club can turn an apparently straightforward question into a test of careful observation.
