Carrie Underwood honored Dolly Parton with a specially chosen jacket and a tear-jerking tribute performance, creating an emotional farewell to the country legend who helped inspire generations.

Carrie Underwood Fights Back Tears Honoring Dolly Parton — Her Custom Jacket Carried a Message From the Country Legend

Carrie Underwood wore a special custom jacket in tribute to Dolly Parton and also sang "See You Again" in her honor

Carrie Underwood paid tribute to Dolly Parton in a deeply personal way just days after the country legend’s death, combining a specially designed jacket with an emotional performance that left the evening centered firmly on Dolly’s memory.

During her concert at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts, Underwood appeared onstage wearing a custom jacket decorated with butterflies, her initials and one of Parton’s most recognizable pieces of advice: “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

But the clothing was only the beginning of the tribute.

Later in the concert, Underwood became emotional as she reflected on losing a woman she considered both an enormous influence and one of the kindest people she had ever met.

Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80, and her loss was still fresh when Underwood took the stage several days later.

Speaking directly to the audience, Underwood said she wanted to “pour my love out” for someone who had influenced countless people.

She also remembered Dolly on a much more personal level.

Underwood described her as “one of the nicest people” she had ever met and admitted that the news had left the world feeling as though “time just stood still.”

To Underwood, however, Parton’s influence was larger than any single moment.

“She’s just one that transcends all space and all time,” she said.

‘I know where she is’

Underwood’s tribute was also deeply connected to her Christian faith.

Although she was grieving Parton’s death, she told the audience she believed she knew where Dolly was.

“I know how much she loved Jesus,” Underwood said.

She then introduced a song that had taken on a particularly powerful meaning following the loss.

Underwood reminded the audience that nearly everyone has someone they have lost but hope to see again someday.

Then she asked concertgoers to raise their phones and illuminate the venue for “Miss Dolly.”

With the room glowing around her, Underwood began singing “See You Again.”

‘See You Again’ became a farewell to Dolly

Underwood released “See You Again” in 2013.

The song centers on losing someone while holding onto the belief that death will not be the final separation.

That message made it a natural choice for the moment.

Rather than simply performing one of Parton’s songs, Underwood used something from her own catalog to express what Dolly’s death meant to her.

The performance followed the same message Underwood had shared immediately after learning of Parton’s passing: she did not believe Dolly was truly gone.

Underwood had already shared a moving farewell

Following Parton’s death, Underwood posted photographs capturing moments the two singers had shared over the years.

“She’s not gone. I know exactly where she is,” Underwood wrote.

She praised Parton’s faith, grace, talent, beauty and humor, while emphasizing the humility and kindness that existed behind the superstar image.

According to Underwood, Dolly possessed a rare ability to make the people around her feel special.

“She was a one of one and no one will ever come close,” she wrote.

Underwood acknowledged that people were entitled to feel sadness over losing such an important figure, but her faith again shaped the way she viewed the loss.

“Heaven gained an angel,” she wrote. “Well done, good and faithful Dolly. Welcome home.”

Their history together stretched back years

Among the photographs Underwood shared was a memory from 2009.

That year, she and Parton performed “I Will Always Love You” together during Underwood’s All-Star Holiday Special.

It was still relatively early in Underwood’s career, coming only four years after she won American Idol.

By then, Dolly had already spent decades as one of country music’s defining artists.

The performance brought together two generations of country stars, and the photograph became considerably more poignant following Parton’s death.

Years later, Underwood’s admiration for Dolly clearly remained.

One jacket carried Dolly’s words back onto the stage

The custom jacket Underwood wore at Tanglewood ultimately added another layer to the farewell.

The butterflies provided a recognizable connection to Parton, while the quote on the back preserved a piece of advice closely associated with her:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

Then Underwood gave the tribute her own message.

A room filled with phone lights.

A singer fighting through her emotions.

And “See You Again,” performed for someone Underwood believes she will someday meet again.

For Carrie Underwood, it was not simply a concert tribute to a country music legend.

It was a goodbye to Dolly — while holding firmly to the belief that the goodbye is only temporary.
