Man Cracks One of The 1% Club’s Toughest Questions in Just 30 Seconds and Wins $100,000

A contestant on 1% Club pulled off an extraordinary last-second save after correctly answering one of the show’s most difficult questions, earning himself a $100,000 prize.

The quiz show challenges 100 contestants with questions designed to test common sense, logic and intelligence. The further the contestants progress, the more difficult the questions become.

One of the biggest prizes is reserved for a question that only 1% of the nation is expected to answer correctly. Anyone who gets it right can claim a share of up to A$100,000 in cash.

For Australian contestant Michael, that opportunity came down to a frantic 30 seconds.

The contestant correctly answered 'one of hardest questions ever' on 1% Club.

A question that left viewers scratching their heads

Host Jim Jefferies presented Michael with the show’s highly anticipated 1% question:

“If January equals 717, March equals 5315 and June equals 4624, then what does August equal? You have 30 seconds to answer, your time starts now.”

It was hardly the sort of question that immediately gives away its logic.

Michael had just half a minute to figure out the pattern and enter his answer. As the clock continued to tick, Jefferies reminded him that only 15 seconds remained.

The pressure increased further when the host announced that Michael had just five seconds left.

Then, right at the last moment, Michael changed his answer.

When the time expired, Jefferies pointed out just how close it had been.

“Okay, your time is up!”

He then told Michael that it had gone down to the wire, noting that he had been typing until the very last second.

Michael admitted that he had indeed changed his answer.

“Yeah, I changed my answer too.”

Jefferies asked whether he was confident about the last-second switch.

“I hope so,” Michael replied.

He luckily changed his answer at the very last second.

Michael’s final answer pays off

The host then asked him to reveal his final answer.

Michael had entered 6848.

When Jefferies asked what his original answer had been, Michael revealed that he had initially put 686.

There was little time left for doubt. Jefferies announced that, for the $100,000 prize, the correct answer was…

6848.

The number appeared on the giant screen as the audience erupted into applause and cheers.

“Congratulations, Michael!

“You have won $100,000. Welcome to the 1% Club!”

Michael had managed to get the answer exactly right, despite changing it at the very last second.

The contestant answered the $100,000 question bang-on.

So how does the puzzle work?

For anyone watching at home who was completely baffled by the question, Jefferies later explained the pattern.

The numbers are based on three things: the number of letters in the month’s name, its position in the calendar and the result of multiplying those two figures.

August has six letters and is the eighth month of the year.

Six multiplied by eight equals 48.

Put those figures together and you get 6848, Michael’s winning answer.

The same pattern explains the examples given in the question:

  • January: 7 letters, first month, 7 × 1 = 7 → 717
  • March: 5 letters, third month, 5 × 3 = 15 → 5315
  • June: 4 letters, sixth month, 4 × 6 = 24 → 4624
  • August: 6 letters, eighth month, 6 × 8 = 48 → 6848

The impressive moment quickly attracted attention on social media, with viewers admitting that they would have struggled to solve the puzzle within the 30-second time limit.

One TikTok user said it had taken almost 10 minutes to figure out the answer and that they could never have worked it out under pressure in half a minute.

Another jokingly declared themselves part of the “zero % club,” saying they had no chance of answering it.

A third viewer simply summed up the reaction with: “Wow, impressive. I did not get that one.”
