Michael J. Fox Leaves Hollywood Stars Emotional As He Accepts Major Honor From Wheelchair And Reflects On His Parkinson’s Battle

Michael J. Fox delivered one of the night’s most emotional moments as he accepted the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, with several famous faces in the audience visibly moved by his deeply personal speech.

The 65-year-old actor was brought onto the stage in a wheelchair, joining presenter and former The Good Wife co-star Julianna Margulies before receiving a lengthy standing ovation.

Among those watching were Fox’s Shrinking co-star Harrison Ford and Nicole Kidman, who appeared emotional as the Back To The Future star reflected on being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at just 29 years old.

Fox also spoke about the fear he initially carried that revealing his condition could cost him the career he had worked so hard to build.

Harrison Ford was among the stars visibly moved as Fox reflected on receiving his Parkinson’s diagnosis at 29.

Fox’s wife Tracy Pollan and their four children watched proudly as he received the honor.

Beginning his speech, Fox thanked the Television Academy before reflecting on Bob Hope and the influence the legendary entertainer had on him.

“Thank you to everyone involved with the television academy for this amazing, humbling honor,” Fox said.

He recalled how Hope had been particularly meaningful to his parents, who were born during the Great Depression, and praised the entertainer’s decades of support for soldiers and military families.

Fox said those lessons would eventually take on an unexpected significance in his own life.

“I couldn’t have known how these lessons would resonate in my own life, until my late 20s, when my life handed me a role I wasn’t looking for,” he said.

That “role” arrived in 1991, when Fox was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29.

For years, he kept the diagnosis private.

“Initially I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret,” Fox told the audience. “I worried it would affect my work and relationships with audiences. Would they laugh if they knew I was sick?”

Fox revealed that he initially kept his diagnosis private because he feared how audiences might react.

When Fox eventually made his condition public, however, the reaction he received was very different from what he had feared.

He credited fans around the world with giving him the confidence to keep moving forward.

“I was stunned by the support from all of you, so uplifted and I hadn’t lost what I do,” he said. “They couldn’t take it away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me. I appreciate it.”

Fox then delivered one of the most powerful lines of his speech, explaining the distinction he eventually learned to make between accepting his diagnosis and giving in to it.

“I understood that accepting Parkinson’s didn’t mean I had to surrender to it.”

Instead, the actor turned his attention toward helping others living with the disease.

He established the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has become a major force in funding Parkinson’s research.

While discussing that work onstage, Fox briefly became emotional.

“I set out to advocate for Parkinson’s disease and raise money. I found brilliant people to start — sorry, I’m losing it,” he said.

He continued, saying he found people capable of leading the effort and committed himself to supporting some of the best scientific research in the world.

Fox said he remains proud of the progress that has been made for patients and their families and expressed his hope that research will ultimately lead to the disease being eradicated.

He also thanked the foundation’s staff, researchers, donors and Parkinson’s patient community for their role in that work.

Fox joined Julianna Margulies onstage before receiving a standing ovation and accepting the prestigious award.

Nicole Kidman appeared visibly emotional while watching Fox address the audience.

The actor then turned his attention to the people closest to him.

He paid tribute to his wife of 38 years, Tracy Pollan, and their four children for the sacrifices, patience and love they have shown throughout his battle with Parkinson’s.

Fox and Pollan share son Sam, 37, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 31, and daughter Esme, 24.

Earlier in the evening, the family had appeared together on the red carpet, where Fox posed while seated in a chair.

Fox was surrounded by Tracy and their four children ahead of receiving the humanitarian honor.

The actor sat for photographs on the carpet amid his long-running battle with Parkinson’s.

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award recognizes philanthropic work that reflects Hope’s long history of charitable service and positive social impact.

For Fox, the honor recognizes a campaign that has occupied much of his life since making his Parkinson’s diagnosis public.

His foundation has spent decades raising money and supporting research aimed at improving treatment and ultimately finding a cure for the neurological disease.

Yet Fox has also continued to find ways back onto the screen.

The five-time Emmy winner recently returned to acting after previously stepping away when the effects of Parkinson’s made memorizing dialogue increasingly difficult.

“A new variable emerged: my ability to memorize lines,” he previously explained.

“There’s a time for everything, and the time for 12-hour workdays was behind me.”

Fox first retired from regular acting in 2000, two years after publicly revealing his diagnosis. He subsequently made appearances in projects including Scrubs and The Good Wife, before taking another break in 2020.

His more recent return came after he found a role that allowed his real-life condition to become part of the character rather than something he needed to disguise.

Fox recently returned to acting in a role that allowed him to incorporate the realities of living with Parkinson’s.

He has said that the arrangement gave him the freedom to arrive on set and use however he was feeling that day as part of his performance.

The role also placed him opposite Harrison Ford, whose character is navigating Parkinson’s disease.

That professional reunion made Ford’s emotional reaction in the audience particularly poignant as Fox spoke about the real-life battle that has shaped more than three decades of his life.

Fox was at the height of his fame when he received his diagnosis in 1991, years after becoming internationally recognized as Marty McFly in the Back To The Future films.

At the time, Parkinson’s threatened not only his health but, in his mind, his relationship with the audiences who had embraced him.

More than three decades later, the reaction inside the room told a very different story.

Fox arrived onstage in a wheelchair, spoke candidly about the fear he once kept secret and received minutes of applause from an audience filled with his peers.

His message was ultimately the same one that has defined much of his advocacy since revealing his diagnosis: accepting Parkinson’s never meant surrendering to it.
