Karen Pirie Confirmed for Season 3 as Scottish Detective Takes on Her Darkest Case Yet
ITV’s acclaimed crime drama Karen Pirie is returning for a third season, with Lauren Lyle reprising her role as the sharp-witted Scottish detective in a new mystery involving concealed human remains, a wartime past and a dangerous pursuit of revenge.
The upcoming six-part series will adapt The Skeleton Road, the third novel in Val McDermid’s bestselling crime series. Produced by World Productions, filming is scheduled to begin in 2027, with acclaimed Scottish screenwriter Gillian Roger Park writing the adaptation.

A Disturbing Discovery Sets the Investigation in Motion
The new series opens with a chilling discovery in Edinburgh: human remains are found hidden in the roof of an abandoned building.
Detective Inspector Karen Pirie soon uncovers the victim’s connection to the conflicts in the Balkans during the 1990s. After escaping the violence, he sought refuge in Scotland and married a woman who has since become a famous author.
As Karen investigates the circumstances surrounding his death, the case attracts unwanted attention and exposes a web of dangerous secrets. With someone apparently intent on delivering their own version of justice, Karen must piece together the truth before another life is lost.
The storyline promises another demanding investigation for the detective, whose determination, quick wit and distinctive Doc Martens have become hallmarks of the series.
Strong Ratings Secure the Drama’s Return

The announcement follows a successful second season, which averaged 5.3 million viewers on ITV and STV last year and reached a peak audience of 5.6 million. The series also generated 11 million streams across ITVX and STV Player.
Huw Kennair Jones, ITV’s commissioning editor, welcomed the return of the drama and Lyle’s award-winning performance. He praised the new adaptation of McDermid’s bestselling novel, highlighting the compelling story developed by Gillian Roger Park.
With World Productions once again behind the series, Jones said audiences on ITV and ITVX could look forward to another gripping drama.
Lauren Lyle Takes on an Expanded Role
Lyle first appeared as Karen Pirie in 2022 and has since brought the character to life through her relentless pursuit of justice and sharp sense of humour. Alongside returning to the lead role, the actress—also known for Outlander and Toxic Town—will serve as an executive producer for Season 3.
Speaking about her return, Lyle said playing Karen had become one of the most rewarding experiences of her career. She also expressed her gratitude that audiences around the world wanted to see more of the detective and her signature bumbag.
Taking on executive producer responsibilities will give Lyle a new opportunity to help shape the series. She joked that the role would allow her to get those higher up “in to shape,” much as Karen would.
More seriously, the 33-year-old said she was grateful to bring the character back to television, describing the third season as a step up, with a wilder story packed with thrills, twists and plenty of eye rolls.
Val McDermid Welcomes the Adaptation of The Skeleton Road

Author Val McDermid, who will executive produce the new season alongside Lyle, said she was delighted that plans for the third series had progressed so far.
The Skeleton Road is a favourite among many readers, she noted, making its adaptation particularly exciting. McDermid also praised the talented team bringing her books to a wider audience and said she was eager to see the finished series.
