Stephen Graham’s Gripping True-Crime Drama Revisits the Case That Shook Britain, With Viewers Calling It “The Best ITV Drama In Years.”

Stephen Graham’s “Superb” True-Crime Drama White House Farm Is Available To Binge On ITVX, And Viewers Have Called It “The Best ITV Drama In Years”

Stephen Graham has delivered plenty of memorable performances throughout his career, but his role in White House Farm stands out for its portrayal of one of Britain’s most harrowing real-life crimes. First broadcast in 2020, the six-part ITV drama revisits a devastating case that shocked the country, combining powerful performances with a careful examination of the events that unfolded at an Essex farmhouse in 1985.

Now available to stream in full on ITVX, the series offers viewers the chance to revisit a case in which the initial police theory was challenged by evidence that pointed in a very different direction. With Graham leading a talented ensemble cast, White House Farm has earned praise for its gripping storytelling and sensitive treatment of a deeply disturbing subject.

Set against the backdrop of a real-life family tragedy, White House Farm dramatises the murders of five members of the Bamber family at their farmhouse in Essex in 1985.

The victims were Sheila Caffell, her six-year-old twin sons, Daniel and Nicholas, and her parents, Nevill and June Bamber. Drawing on extensive research, interviews and published accounts, including Carol Ann Lee’s book The Murders at White House Farm, the drama examines the investigation that followed the killings and the questions that emerged as detectives worked to establish what had happened.

Initially, Essex Police believed that Sheila Caffell, played by Cressida Bonas, had killed her family before taking her own life. However, Detective Sergeant Stan Jones, portrayed by Mark Addy, began to question that explanation. His suspicions increasingly centred on Sheila’s brother, Jeremy Bamber, played by Freddie Fox, who had been the first person to call the police to the property.

Bamber has maintained his innocence. He was ultimately convicted of murdering his parents, sister and nephews and is serving life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

As the investigation develops, the series follows the detectives as they reconsider the evidence and confront the possibility that their initial understanding of the crime was wrong.

Stephen Graham Leads An Outstanding Cast

Graham plays DCI Thomas ‘Taff’ Jones, the senior investigating officer responsible for the case. Initially approaching the investigation as a relatively straightforward matter, Jones gradually encounters evidence that challenges the original theory and draws attention towards Jeremy Bamber.

Graham brings considerable weight to the role, while Mark Addy’s portrayal of DS Stan Jones adds another perspective to the investigation. Together, their performances help anchor a story in which the search for the truth becomes increasingly complicated.

Freddie Fox also delivers a particularly unsettling performance as Jeremy Bamber. Speaking to Radio Times about his interpretation of the character, Fox explained that Bamber could initially appear charming, while possessing an elusive quality that made people uneasy.

“The Jeremy Bamber that I play is, I think, at least initially, charming and there’s certainly something that draws you towards him, something you can’t quite place,” Fox said.

He also described accounts of Bamber’s presence in a room, noting that contemporary descriptions suggested he could create an atmosphere that others struggled to understand but found uncomfortable.

That contrast between outward charm and an unsettling undercurrent is an important part of Fox’s portrayal, adding another layer to the drama’s examination of the investigation.

Who Is In The Cast Of White House Farm?

The six-episode series features a strong ensemble of established British actors, with each performer bringing a different perspective to the events and their aftermath.

The main cast includes:

  • Stephen Graham (A Thousand Blows, Adolescence) as DCI Thomas ‘Taff’ Jones
  • Freddie Fox (The Riot Club) as Jeremy Bamber
  • Mark Addy (A Knight’s Tale) as DS Stan Jones
  • Mark Stanley (Under Salt Marsh) as Colin Caffell
  • Cressida Bonas (Tulip Fever) as Sheila Caffell
  • Alexa Davies (Raised by Wolves) as Julie Mugford
  • Grace Calder (City of Tiny Lights) as Heather Amos
  • Richard Goulding (The Windsors) as David
  • Gemma Whelan (Gentleman Jack) as Ann Eaton
  • Nichola Farrell (Chariots of Fire) as Nevill Bamber
  • Amanda Burton (Silent Witness) as June Bamber

The combination of experienced performers and a carefully constructed account of the investigation gives the series much of its impact, keeping the focus on the people involved as well as the unanswered questions that shaped the case.

Is White House Farm Worth Watching?

For viewers who enjoy true-crime dramas grounded in real events, White House Farm is a compelling choice, although its subject matter makes it a difficult watch at times.

The murders at the centre of the story are deeply distressing, and the series does not shy away from the seriousness of the case. Rather than relying on sensationalism, it follows the investigation and the gradual reassessment of the evidence, allowing the events themselves to drive the narrative.

Graham, Fox and Addy are particular standouts, delivering performances that give the investigation a human dimension without losing sight of the tragedy behind it.

The drama has also been described as “the best ITV drama in years”, reflecting the strong praise it has received from viewers. For anyone looking for a crime series that balances suspense with a sensitive approach to a real-life case, it is well worth adding to the watchlist.

How To Watch White House Farm

All six episodes of White House Farm are available to stream on ITVX.

What Other Stephen Graham Dramas Can You Watch?

the secret agent

If White House Farm leaves you wanting to explore more of Stephen Graham’s work, there are other dramas worth considering.

The Secret Agent

For those who enjoy period dramas, The Secret Agent offers a different kind of story. Set in London in 1886, the three-part series follows Verloc, played by Toby Jones, who operates a seedy shop in Soho while secretly working as an agent for the Russian Embassy.

His assignment involves spying on a group of London anarchists, but his activities risk coming to the attention of Inspector Heat, played by Graham, from Scotland Yard’s Special Crimes Division.

The series combines a historical setting with espionage and political intrigue.

A Patch Of Fog

For something more psychologically unsettling, A Patch of Fog takes Graham into darker territory.

He plays Robert, a security guard and troubled loner who catches Sandy, portrayed by Conleth Hill, shoplifting. Rather than immediately reporting him to the police, Robert offers to keep quiet on the condition that Sandy joins him for a drink.

What follows is the beginning of a disturbing infatuation, as an apparently simple encounter develops into something far more uncomfortable.

The film offers another opportunity to see Graham explore a complex character in a tense, unsettling story. A Patch of Fog is available to stream on Disney+.

With its gripping investigation, strong performances and thoughtful handling of a tragic real-life case, White House Farm remains a worthwhile choice for anyone searching for a British crime drama to watch next.
