Bill Skarsgård is trading supernatural nightmares for the horrors of World War II.

Best known for playing some of modern horror’s most unsettling figures, including Pennywise in the IT franchise and Count Orlok in Nosferatu, Skarsgård takes on a very different kind of role in Netflix’s upcoming war drama The Mosquito Bowl. The newly released teaser puts him at the center of a true story about four celebrated college football players who abandon their athletic careers to enlist in the Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Skarsgård stars as Bob Baumann, with Nicholas Galitzine playing John McLaughry. Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis round out the quartet as Tony Butkovich and David Schreiner. Together, they are pulled from the world of college football into the brutal realities of the Pacific Theater.

Watch the Official Teaser for The Mosquito Bowl

Netflix’s footage shifts rapidly between Marine training, football, and the chaos of combat. The contrast is central to the film: these young men begin as college stars with promising athletic futures, only to find themselves preparing for one of the most brutal campaigns of the war.

The story builds toward the invasion of Okinawa, while a legendary football game provides a final connection to the lives they had before enlistment. For many of the players involved, that game would become their last.

The official synopsis sets up the story: following Pearl Harbor, four of America’s top college football stars put their fame aside to join the Marines. As they prepare for Okinawa, they take part in a celebrated game featuring some of the greatest players of their era.

The teaser gives the material a grounded, physical quality. Military drills, battlefield destruction and explosions replace the stylized horror imagery audiences may associate with Skarsgård, putting the actor in unfamiliar territory.

A True Story Behind the Film

The Mosquito Bowl is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. The book chronicles the college football players who entered military service during World War II and the remarkable game that brought many of them together before the Battle of Okinawa.

The project also brings Bissinger and director Peter Berg back together. Bissinger wrote Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, his acclaimed account of high school football in Odessa, Texas. Berg directed the 2004 film adaptation and later developed the story into the 2006 television series.

For Berg, the connection to the real people at the center of The Mosquito Bowl was an important part of making the film. The director has described the project as a reality-based story intended to honor the Marines who sacrificed their lives during 1944 and 1945.

From College Football Stars to Marines

The four central characters each bring a different personality and football background to the story.

Nicholas Galitzine plays John McLaughry, a natural leader who was a quarterback at Brown University, where he was coached by his father. His confidence on the football field becomes part of the determination he carries into the Pacific.

Skarsgård’s Bob Baumann played for the University of Wisconsin. He is portrayed as an energetic, larger-than-life personality who approaches confrontation with the same force he brings to everything else.

Ray Nicholson plays Tony Butkovich, the Purdue star regarded as an exceptional athlete and the best offensive player of his era. Butkovich set records for Purdue and appeared destined for sporting greatness before the war changed his path.

Tom Francis plays David Schreiner, another University of Wisconsin player and teammate of Baumann. Unlike Baumann’s forceful personality, Schreiner brings a more measured and strategic approach to the group.

The actors developed a strong bond while spending months preparing for and filming the movie. Skarsgård described that relationship as a combination of the camaraderie found in football and the brotherhood associated with the Marine Corps.

Peter Berg Takes on Another War Story

Peter Berg directs and produces The Mosquito Bowl, continuing his long association with stories centered on athletes, soldiers and real-world conflict.

The filmmaker previously directed Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, making the World War II setting a natural fit for his style. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Mark L. Smith, whose credits include The Revenant.

The production comes from Berg’s Film 44, with Brian Grazer producing for Imagine Entertainment alongside Alex Gayner. Ezra Emanuel, Buzz Bissinger and Jeb Brody serve as executive producers. The film also continues Berg and Film 44’s creative partnership with Netflix following American Primeval and Painkiller.

A Production Built Around Realism

The filmmakers have emphasized realism throughout the production. The cast underwent extensive preparation to capture the physical demands of Marine training and combat.

Galitzine has said the production relied on limited use of stunt doubles, with the actors performing much of the action themselves. According to the actor, that included working around explosives, fire and other effects at close range.

The film was shot in Australia, including locations in Queensland and northern New South Wales. Those landscapes were used to portray everything from Marine training grounds to the Pacific Theater. Berg praised Queensland’s locations for their suitability to the story.

For Francis, who joined the project after his Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard, The Mosquito Bowl marked his first film role. He described the five-month production as a particularly significant experience and said the cast entered the movie as boys and left it as men.

Pat McAfee Joins the Marines

The cast also includes sports analyst and former NFL player Pat McAfee, who appears as a U.S. Marine drill instructor.

His character pushes the former football stars through the demands of military training, helping establish the discipline and reliance on one another that will become essential once they enter combat.

The film’s ensemble also includes Brent Comer and Dominic Bogart.

When Does The Mosquito Bowl Come Out?

Netflix has confirmed that The Mosquito Bowl will receive a limited theatrical release in the United States on October 30, 2026.

The film will then arrive on Netflix on November 25, 2026.

With its combination of football, military history and the personal stories of four young athletes caught up in World War II, the film follows a group of men whose sporting futures are overtaken by events far beyond their control.

For Skarsgård, it also represents a notable departure from the horror roles that have defined much of his recent career. Instead of monsters and supernatural terror, The Mosquito Bowl places him in a very different kind of nightmare: a battlefield where the stakes are painfully real.
