How Did People Miss This?! Crime Fans Are Rediscovering A Gritty Four-Part Glasgow Thriller — And Viewers Say They Were “Completely Hooked” By The Dark, Addictive Drama From Start To Finish.

Prime Video: The Field of Blood

The four-part BBC thriller has been drawing fresh praise from viewers who say they were hooked from the opening episode

A crime drama set in 1980s Glasgow has been attracting a new audience more than a decade after it first appeared on television.

The Field of Blood, the BBC adaptation of Denise Mina’s bestselling crime novel, first aired in 2011 before returning for a second series in 2013. The two-part seasons make up just four episodes in total, offering a compact crime story for viewers looking for something they can finish quickly.

The drama follows Paddy Meehan, a young woman trying to establish herself in the overwhelmingly male world of Scottish journalism. Set in Glasgow in 1982, the story combines a murder investigation with Paddy’s determination to become an investigative reporter.

Jayd Johnson takes the lead as Paddy, with David Morrissey, Peter Capaldi and Still Game star Ford Kiernan among the supporting cast. Johnson’s performance earned her the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actress.

A young reporter takes on a dangerous murder case

Paddy begins the story as a copy boy in the hard-drinking, fiercely competitive newsroom of the Daily News. She has ambitions far beyond her junior position and wants to prove that she can become a serious investigative journalist.

Her opportunity arrives when a young boy, Brian Wilcox, is kidnapped and murdered.

Paddy believes she can see a connection between the killing and an earlier crime that others have overlooked. Determined to investigate for herself, she begins following the evidence despite resistance from those around her.

Her pursuit of the truth quickly becomes personal. As her investigation develops, Paddy finds herself facing pressure from colleagues as well as her devoutly Catholic family. Her actions threaten to make her an outsider at home while also putting both herself and those around her in danger.

The BBC’s original synopsis describes Paddy as a young woman entering a world dominated by men, where pursuing her journalistic ambitions comes with an increasingly heavy price.

The closer she gets to discovering who is responsible for the murder, the more dangerous her investigation becomes.

The first series was adapted from Denise Mina’s 2005 novel The Field of Blood. BBC records confirm that the drama’s first two episodes aired on BBC One Scotland on May 8 and May 9, 2011.

From copy boy to journalist

Paddy’s determination eventually brings her closer to the career she has always wanted.

When the story resumes in 1984, she has secured her dream position as a journalist. But getting the job does not mean the problems are over. Her new position brings another investigation, and Paddy once again finds herself drawn into dangerous territory.

The second series, titled The Dead Hour, aired in August 2013. Its two episodes continued Paddy’s story while introducing another major investigation. The BBC’s programme records show that the second episode dealt with a campaign against the NUM and a government cover-up as tensions within the newspaper newsroom intensified.

Across both series, there are only four episodes. That short running time has become one of the drama’s attractions for viewers discovering it years after its original broadcast.

Peter Capaldi

A cast that continues to attract praise

Jayd Johnson leads the series as Paddy Meehan, while David Morrissey plays Murray Devlin and Peter Capaldi appears as Dr Pete. Ford Kiernan plays George McVie, with Bronagh Gallagher as Paddy’s mother, Trisha Meehan.

The cast also includes Katherine Kelly, Brian Pettifer, Matt Costello and other familiar Scottish and British performers. BBC programme records list Johnson, Kiernan, Morrissey, Capaldi and Gallagher among the principal contributors to the series.

Johnson’s performance has proved particularly memorable for viewers who have discovered the drama more recently.

One IMDb reviewer said they had only recently found the series while browsing BBC Scotland and were surprised by how much they enjoyed it, describing the four episodes as brilliant and questioning why they had taken so long to discover it.

Another viewer singled out Johnson, saying she was excellent as Paddy and expressing surprise that she had not gone on to have a more prolific career. The same viewer also praised David Morrissey and Peter Capaldi, as well as Bronagh Gallagher’s performance as Paddy’s mother.

Other reactions have been similarly positive, with one viewer calling the drama a solid and extremely watchable crime offering. Another said the series had left them completely hooked and interested in reading Denise Mina’s books.

Why The Field of Blood still stands out

Part of the appeal is the setting. Rather than placing its investigation in a contemporary police department, the drama takes viewers into Glasgow’s newspaper world of the early 1980s.

Paddy is forced to navigate sexism, professional rivalries and family pressure while trying to establish herself as a journalist. Her investigation gives the story its central mystery, but her struggle to earn credibility in a male-dominated workplace is equally important to the character.

The BBC’s programme archive describes the first episode as an adaptation of Denise Mina’s novel in which Paddy battles prejudice while pursuing the truth about a murder that has implications for her own family.

The series has since developed a reputation as a compact crime drama that is easy to work through in a few sittings. There are two seasons, each consisting of two episodes, for four episodes altogether.

That makes it a particularly straightforward choice for anyone who wants a complete crime story without committing to a long-running series.

Where to watch The Field of Blood

The original article states that The Field of Blood had been removed from BBC iPlayer, while all four episodes were available to Amazon Prime subscribers.

Current streaming information can vary by country and platform. Acorn TV currently lists both seasons, including The Field of Blood and The Dead Hour, with all four episodes available through its service.

The series is also listed by Rotten Tomatoes as a two-season BBC crime drama, with Season 1 released in May 2011 and Season 2 in August 2013.

For viewers who missed it when it originally aired, The Field of Blood offers a short route into Denise Mina’s Paddy Meehan stories, with Jayd Johnson at the centre of a dark Glasgow mystery that continues to find new admirers years after its BBC debut.
