Netflix’s latest viewing figures have produced an unusual result: The Whisper Man may have been the streamer’s most-watched movie of the week, but it was beaten by a 27-minute preview for a video game.

For the week of August 24 through August 30, 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look drew 31.1 million views on Netflix, putting it ahead of every other title on the service’s weekly charts. The Whisper Man, starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan, followed with 23.2 million views.

The result is particularly striking because Netflix’s GTA 6 special was available on the platform for only part of the tracking period.

GTA 6 Beats The Whisper Man on Netflix

Netflix has spent years expanding beyond its traditional role as a place to stream movies and television. The company has experimented with documentaries, interactive projects such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and video games, giving subscribers more types of entertainment to explore.

The GTA 6 preview represents another unusual step.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026, giving subscribers an exclusive first look at Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated sequel. The 27-minute presentation was then released more broadly, including on Rockstar’s YouTube channel, after a six-hour Netflix-exclusive window.

Despite having only four days within Netflix’s August 24-30 measurement period, the special accumulated 31.1 million views. It also reached No. 1 on Netflix’s English-language film chart in 87 of the 93 countries tracked by the service.

That put it ahead of The Whisper Man, which finished the week with 23.2 million views.

Netflix itself places the GTA 6 extended look on its English-language film list, even though it is fundamentally a presentation for a video game rather than a conventional movie. That classification makes the result especially unusual.

The Whisper Man Still Had the Bigger Watch-Time Total

The raw view count does not tell the entire story.

The Whisper Man runs for approximately 1 hour and 54 minutes, while Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look is only 27 minutes long. Netflix calculates a view by dividing total hours watched by a title’s runtime, rather than simply counting every time playback begins.

That distinction explains why The Whisper Man could receive fewer views while still generating substantially more total watch time.

Based on Netflix’s figures, the GTA 6 presentation generated about 14 million hours watched, while The Whisper Man accumulated roughly 44.1 million hours. The movie’s much longer runtime gives each completed viewing considerably more weight in the total-hours figure.

In other words, GTA 6 needed far more individual views to compete with a feature-length movie on hours watched. Its ability to surpass The Whisper Man in Netflix’s view metric despite being less than half an hour long makes the result even more notable.

Why The GTA 6 Numbers Stand Out

The enormous audience is a reflection of the anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI, which has been one of the most eagerly awaited video games since the release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013.

That wait has lasted more than a decade. The new extended look gave fans a significantly longer glimpse at Rockstar’s next installment, making its arrival on Netflix an unusual crossover between streaming entertainment and gaming.

Netflix described the premiere as a first-of-its-kind event for the service. The footage was captured entirely from the game running on PlayStation 5, offering a deeper look at the upcoming title than previous promotional material.

The preview also arrived as interest in the game was already exceptionally high. Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the biggest entertainment launches ever, while Grand Theft Auto VI has spent years building anticipation ahead of its planned release.

The sequel is currently scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.

The Whisper Man Remains Netflix’s Biggest Movie of the Week

Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott, and Robert De Niro in The Whisper Man

Although GTA 6 dominated Netflix’s overall numbers, The Whisper Man still had a strong showing as a traditional movie.

The thriller, based on Alex North’s bestselling novel, stars Robert De Niro as retired detective Pete Willis, Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy, and Michelle Monaghan as Detective Amanda Beck. The story begins when Tom’s eight-year-old son, Jake, is abducted, forcing Tom to seek help from his estranged father.

The investigation becomes more disturbing when the disappearance appears connected to the notorious serial killer known as the Whisper Man, a criminal Pete helped put behind bars years earlier.

That premise gives the film two intertwined stories: the search for a missing child and the damaged relationship between a father and son. Director James Ashcroft and the filmmakers have emphasized the family relationship at the center of the thriller, with the serial-killer investigation providing the larger mystery.

The Whisper Man was released on Netflix on August 28, 2026, and finished the August 24-30 tracking period with 23.2 million views, making it the second-ranked title on the global English-language film chart.

A Record That May Be Difficult to Repeat

The unusual part of Netflix’s latest chart is not simply that GTA 6 attracted more viewers than The Whisper Man. It is the circumstances behind those numbers.

A 27-minute video-game preview, available for only four days during the measurement period, managed to become Netflix’s most-watched title of the week with 31.1 million views. It topped the English-language film chart in 87 countries and outperformed the platform’s conventional movie and television releases during the same period.

At the same time, The Whisper Man demonstrates why Netflix’s view figures need to be considered alongside runtime and total hours watched. Its 23.2 million views translated into far more hours of viewing because audiences were watching a feature-length thriller rather than a 27-minute presentation.

For Netflix, the result also highlights how far the service’s audience can extend beyond traditional movies and television. A major video-game reveal was able to compete directly with the platform’s biggest entertainment releases and, for one week, beat all of them by Netflix’s own view-counting system.

That makes the GTA 6 extended look a particularly unusual entry in Netflix’s weekly history, while The Whisper Man remains the week’s most-watched conventional movie.
