Tom Hardy’s Gripping Psychological Drama With Olivia Colman And An All-Star Cast Is Now Streaming On Netflix – And There’s A Surprising Twist
One actor carries the entire film on screen, while some of Hollywood’s biggest names are heard only through a phone.
Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott and Tom Holland. It sounds like the cast of a major Hollywood production. But Locke has an unusual twist that makes it unlike most star-studded dramas: Tom Hardy is the only actor who actually appears on screen.

Everyone else is heard through phone conversations as Hardy’s character drives through the night. It’s a bold creative choice that could easily have fallen flat, but the performances make every voice feel like a real presence inside the car.
And Hardy has to do almost all the heavy lifting himself.
Best known to many viewers for his role as Harry Da Souza in the crime drama MobLand, Hardy takes on a very different challenge in Locke. There are no elaborate action sequences or dramatic locations to distract from the story. Instead, the film relies on his ability to convey mounting fear, guilt and determination through subtle changes in expression and voice.

One Phone Call Threatens To Destroy Everything
Written and directed by Steven Knight, Locke centres on Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy), a construction manager whose carefully organised life begins to collapse after a single phone call.
The timing could hardly be worse.
The following morning, Ivan is supposed to oversee the biggest concrete pour of his career. It’s a massive construction operation involving precise coordination, and once the process begins, it cannot simply be stopped.
But then he receives news that changes everything.
Bethan, a woman he had a one-night stand with, has gone into premature labour. Rather than remain at the Birmingham construction site, Ivan makes the decision to leave and drive to London to be with her.
That choice comes with serious consequences.
As he attempts to manage the crucial construction operation remotely from his car, Ivan must also deal with the damage his decision threatens to inflict on his marriage and family.

An Entire Drama Unfolds Through Phone Calls
Almost the entire film takes place during Ivan’s nighttime journey.
There are no conventional scene changes or elaborate action sequences. The tension comes from a series of increasingly difficult phone conversations with the people who matter most to him, including colleagues, family members and those affected by his decisions.
Every call brings another problem. Every mile makes the situation more complicated.
The premise is remarkably simple, but the emotional stakes are anything but. Hardy keeps the audience invested as Ivan struggles to maintain control of several parts of his life at once, despite having little power over how events unfold.
It’s a demanding performance that requires him to hold the screen almost entirely on his own. He delivers, turning an ordinary car journey into an increasingly tense psychological drama.

The Surprising Cast Behind The Voices
Although Hardy is the only actor viewers see throughout the film, the voices accompanying him belong to an impressive collection of familiar stars.
The cast includes:
- Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown) as Bethan.
- Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair) as Katrina, Ivan’s wife.
- Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Fleabag) as Donal, his colleague at the construction site.
- Tom Holland (Spider-Man) as Eddie, Ivan’s son.
- Bill Milner (Son of Rambow) as Sean, his other son.
Hearing these actors take on roles so different from some of their best-known performances adds another layer of interest to the film.
A 90% Rotten Tomatoes Score Makes It Worth Watching
Released in 2013, Locke proves that a compelling film doesn’t need a sprawling cast on screen or spectacular set pieces to keep audiences hooked.
With a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Steven Knight’s psychological drama has earned plenty of critical recognition for its unusual storytelling and Hardy’s commanding central performance.
For anyone looking for something different from the usual Netflix thriller, this is one film worth adding to the watchlist.
Locke is available to stream now on Netflix.
