Dolly Parton’s Sister Stella Breaks Her Silence After Her Death — And Reveals What She’ll Miss Most

Stella Parton Opens Up About Sister Dolly's Life & Legacy In New Interview

For the first time since Dolly Parton’s death, her younger sister Stella Parton has opened up about the loss of the woman she had spoken to every Tuesday, shared coffee with over the phone, and known long before the world knew her as Dolly Parton.

Sitting down with Gayle King for CBS Mornings, Stella offered an unusually personal glimpse into her sister’s final years, her nearly six-decade marriage to Carl Dean, and the qualities she believes made Dolly so extraordinary.

But even as she spoke openly about her grief, Stella made clear that some parts of Dolly’s life would remain private.

“It’s Not My Business To Tell Her Business”

Dolly died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, following a brief battle with cancer.

The family confirmed that she had been diagnosed with cancer but chose not to reveal what type.

When Gayle King asked Stella why they had kept the diagnosis private, her answer reflected the loyalty that had always surrounded Dolly.

“That was her business,” Stella explained.

She said Dolly never specifically asked her family to keep the details secret, but she also never gave them permission to discuss them publicly.

For Stella, that distinction mattered.

“It’s not my business to tell her business,” she said.

Stella Sets The Record Straight On Carl Dean

Dolly’s relationship with Carl Dean was another deeply personal part of her life.

The couple were married for almost 59 years before Carl died in 2025, maintaining an unusually private relationship despite Dolly’s extraordinary fame.

According to Stella, Carl adored his wife.

“He was fascinated with her,” she said, describing him as someone who thought Dolly was funny and adored her personality.

But Carl had little interest in the entertainment world surrounding her.

He would have preferred Dolly at home, barefoot and with her hair tied back, cooking in the kitchen and simply enjoying ordinary life.

Yet Stella stressed that his lack of interest in showbusiness never meant he wasn’t proud of Dolly.

“He loved her enough to let her be what she was,” she said.

Stella also rejected the idea that Dolly’s death was caused by a broken heart after Carl’s passing.

She acknowledged that Dolly was deeply sad and that watching Carl’s health decline had been painful for her, but she did not believe his death made Dolly sick.

“I think she worked too hard,” Stella said, suggesting that Dolly may not have taken as much care of herself as she should have.

Their relationship, she added, was “very unique and very deep and loyal.”

The Sister She Spoke To Every Tuesday

Stella and Dolly were only three years apart, and their relationship remained remarkably close throughout their lives.

Even after Dolly became one of the most famous women in the world, the sisters maintained their own ordinary ritual.

Every Tuesday, they would have coffee together over the phone.

They would gossip, catch up and make plans, just as they always had.

That makes Stella’s answer to one question from Gayle King particularly poignant: What will she miss most?

It wasn’t Dolly’s fame, achievements or music.

It was her optimism.

“Her optimism is what I’m gonna miss the most,” Stella said, calling her sister the most optimistic person she had ever known.

And despite the pain of losing her, Stella said she believes Dolly was at peace at the end.

“She knew where she was going,” Stella said. “She wasn’t going anywhere bad.”

The Dolly Only Her Sister Knew

Stella also shared one surprisingly funny detail about life with Dolly after she became a global superstar.

She said she never really saw her sister without the famous Dolly Parton look.

When Dolly stayed with her, she would apparently even sleep in her makeup.

But Stella knew what was underneath it all.

“I knew what she looked like without makeup,” she said with a laugh. “She looked like me.”

It was a reminder that beneath the wigs, makeup, rhinestones and unmistakable image was still the same sister Stella had grown up with.

Stella Says No One In Nashville Reached Out

The interview also took an unexpected turn when Stella discussed the response from the country music community following Dolly’s death.

Despite the worldwide tributes to Dolly, Stella said she had not received a single condolence from entertainers she knew in Nashville.

She acknowledged that her outspoken political activism on social media may have played a role.

“I’m assuming it might be because of my political activism on social media,” Stella said, while admitting she did not know for certain.

When asked about Dolly’s own political beliefs, however, Stella drew a firm line.

Dolly had her own views, she said, but she would not reveal them.

“She never shared,” Stella explained. “She never would have done that.”

For Stella, protecting that privacy remained important even after Dolly’s death.

“Her Creativity Knew No Bounds”

In the end, Stella was asked how she wanted the world to remember her sister.

Her answer went far beyond Dolly’s status as a country music icon.

She described Dolly as sweet, kind, loving, brilliant and extraordinarily talented, praising a creativity that she believed had no limits.

But perhaps the most powerful part of Stella’s tribute was what Dolly represented to people who had never been given permission to believe in themselves.

Stella said she wants Dolly’s story to inspire young boys and girls who may feel they have no opportunity to dream.

Because, in her eyes, that was one of Dolly’s greatest gifts.

“She gave us permission to dream.”

And after a lifetime spent watching her sister turn impossible dreams into reality, Stella’s final message feels like one of the most fitting ways to remember Dolly Parton.
