Now, The Real-Life Jolene Is Finally Telling Her Story — From That Childhood Meeting With Dolly To The Moment She Discovered The Connection She Never Knew Existed. A Childhood Memory. A Legendary Song. And A Truth That Took A Lifetime To Uncover.

Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ Inspiration Finally Reveals Her Story — And She Only Discovered It On The Day Dolly Died

For more than five decades, Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” has been one of country music’s most recognisable songs. But the little girl whose name inspired its unforgettable title had no idea she was the real-life Jolene — until the very day Dolly Parton died.

Now, Jolenna Dailey has finally told the story herself, revealing how an ordinary childhood meeting with the country legend in 1967 eventually became an extraordinary connection to one of Dolly’s most beloved songs.

In a video shared by her daughter Jenna Dailey on September 8, Jolenna sits in a rocking chair and is asked a deceptively simple question: “Who is Jolene?”

Her answer is immediate.

“It’s me. I’m Jolene.”

For years, Jolenna had heard the same question from people who noticed her unusual name. Was she named after Dolly Parton’s famous song?

She always had the same response: no. She was born in 1961, several years before “Jolene” was released.

But that answer turned out to be far more complicated than she ever realised.

Dolly Parton's "Jolene" was released 53 years ago, and the woman who was once the little girl who inspired the name of the song has now shared her story.

The Childhood Meeting That Changed Everything

Dolly had previously explained how she came up with the name “Jolene.”

Speaking to NPR in 2008, Parton recalled meeting a beautiful eight-year-old girl after one of her appearances on The Porter Wagoner Show in the 1960s.

The girl had red hair, green eyes and a name Dolly immediately loved.

“Jolene,” she told Dolly.

The singer instantly repeated the name to herself and realised it sounded like a song.

That moment eventually inspired “Jolene,” the title track of Dolly’s 13th studio album, which was released in 1973 and went on to become one of her signature songs.

For decades, however, the identity of that little girl remained a mystery to the public — and, remarkably, to the girl herself.

Then came August 25, 2026.

Jolenna Learned The Truth After Dolly’s Death

Dolly Parton died at the age of 80 on August 25.

On that same day, one of Jolenna’s co-workers heard the news and remembered her connection to the name “Jolene.” The colleague asked whether there was any chance Dolly’s famous story could actually have been about Jolenna.

They searched for the original account and discovered Dolly’s explanation about meeting a little girl at a concert.

That was when everything suddenly clicked.

“Oh, wow,” Jolenna remembered thinking. “I could be Jolene.”

She immediately contacted her older brother and asked him to tell her about the famous person they had met as children.

His answer provided the missing piece.

It was Dolly Parton.

According to her brother, the siblings had met Dolly in 1967 at Buck Lake Ranch near Angola, Indiana. The children had apparently caught Dolly’s attention because they were all dressed alike, and he remembered the singer as kind and sweet.

Their family photograph from that time even appears in Jolenna’s video.

Then Jolenna found an old interview in which Dolly explained the story behind the name.

And there was another striking detail.

In the clip, Dolly appears to say “Jolenna” rather than simply “Jolene.”

Her brother had no doubts.

“Yep, that was you!”

“Yes, I’m Jolene”

The discovery left Jolenna with an extraordinary realisation: the woman behind one of country music’s most famous names had been standing in front of Dolly all those years ago.

“Yes, I’m Jolene, and I did not find that out until the day of Dolly’s death,” she said.

Jolenna was only around five or six years old when she met Dolly, who was still years away from becoming the global superstar she would eventually become.

She had spent most of her life knowing that her name sounded like the title of Dolly’s song. What she never knew was that the connection went much deeper.

The little girl Dolly remembered was apparently her.

A Story Jolenna Wanted To Share

Jolenna said she decided to tell her story because she knows how fascinated people are by the real stories hiding behind famous songs and films.

She had seen people repeatedly asking who the little girl was who inspired Dolly’s song — and whether that girl even knew about the story.

Now they have an answer.

For Jolenna, though, the discovery seems to mean more than simply learning that she inspired a legendary song title.

To her, it offered one final glimpse into Dolly Parton’s character.

“It just really shows, to me, how sweet Dolly was and how she saw people and remembered people,” Jolenna said.

After nearly 60 years, the mystery surrounding the little girl behind “Jolene” has taken an astonishing turn.

The child Dolly met in Indiana grew up, lived an ordinary life and carried that unusual name for decades without knowing its extraordinary connection. She only discovered that she was the real-life inspiration after Dolly was gone.

And somehow, that makes the story of “Jolene” feel even more personal than the song itself.
