Dolly Parton’s Final Moments in “Forever Country” Take on New Meaning After Her Death

There is something hauntingly beautiful about the final moments of “Forever Country.” After moving through a field filled with generations of country music’s biggest names, the camera eventually settles on one unmistakable figure: Dolly Parton.

The project, released under the collective name Artists of Then, Now & Forever, united 30 CMA Award-winning acts from different generations. Produced by Shane McAnally and directed by Grammy Award-winning filmmaker Joseph Kahn, “Forever Country” combined three iconic songs into one ambitious musical tribute.

The result was an instant success. The single debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and reached No. 21 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Now, fans are returning to the video and discovering an ending that feels remarkably different after Parton’s passing.

The idea behind “Forever Country”

The concept began with a straightforward mission: celebrate five decades of the CMA Awards by bringing together artists who represented different eras of country music.

McAnally was involved from the early stages, while the CMA eventually brought Kahn into the project. Rather than creating a conventional ensemble performance, Kahn proposed something much larger — combining three beloved country songs into a single musical journey.

Around 40 songs were initially considered before the creative team settled on three:

• John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”
• Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again”
• Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”

Other possibilities included “Gentle On My Mind” and “The Gambler,” but the final three offered the right emotional progression.

“Take Me Home, Country Roads” evoked home and belonging. “On the Road Again” represented the life of a musician constantly moving from one place to another. And “I Will Always Love You” brought love, separation and heartbreak into the story.

There was also a notable connection between their creators: Denver, Nelson and Parton had all won the CMA Entertainer of the Year award.

Together, the songs became a sweeping musical portrait of country music.

A celebration across five decades

The CMA intentionally assembled artists from different generations, creating a lineup that reflected the evolution of the genre.

The participants included Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, George Strait, Kacey Musgraves, Eric Church, Ronnie Milsap, Charley Pride, Dierks Bentley, Trisha Yearwood, Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Martina McBride, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Willie Nelson, Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, Brett Eldredge, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton, with Randy Travis also appearing in the video.

The CMA described the project as bringing together 30 CMA Award-winning acts, representing the organization’s history across all five decades.

Not every artist approached was able to participate. Toby Keith, Billy Currington, Zac Brown Band, Thomas Rhett, Chris Young and Florida Georgia Line were among those who could not take part because of scheduling conflicts.

One of the most moving appearances came from Randy Travis.

Only three years earlier, Travis had suffered a debilitating stroke that left him unable to sing. Even so, he appeared in the “Forever Country” video, adding another powerful reminder of the generations of artists whose work helped shape country music.

The recording and filming took place ahead of the week of the CMT Awards and CMA Fest, when many of the performers were already gathered in Nashville.

Dolly Parton’s voice became the defining moment

Despite the extraordinary lineup, Parton’s contribution ultimately became one of the most memorable parts of the entire production.

Her section centered on “I Will Always Love You,” the song she wrote and originally recorded herself.

When Parton entered the studio to record her contribution, the vocal that made the final version was reportedly her first take.

McAnally later recalled how intimidating the session was. He had never met Parton before and knew he would have to direct her while working on a song so closely identified with her own career.

Kahn, too, admitted that working with Parton made him nervous, despite his experience with major artists.

In the end, there was little need for elaborate intervention.

Parton simply delivered the vocal.

McAnally later told The Charlotte Observer that the recording was her first vocal take and was used without tuning, underscoring just how effortlessly she captured the moment.
