Lainey Wilson is remembering Dolly Parton not simply as a country music legend, but as a friend whose final words to her have taken on an especially emotional meaning.

Following Parton’s death at 80, Wilson turned to Instagram to share a deeply personal tribute, revealing that she and the country icon had spoken on the phone just a couple of weeks before her passing.

Wilson said she felt connected to Parton even before they officially met.

“I felt like you were my friend before we even met,” Wilson wrote, explaining that Parton had a rare ability to make people feel as though they already belonged in her world.

Once they actually became friends, Wilson said, the two had plenty to talk about.

Their final conversation touched on far more than music. Wilson recalled discussing the realities of the entertainment business, the sacrifices required to succeed and the people they loved.

They also spoke about Parton’s late husband, Carl Dean, and Wilson’s own relationship with her husband, Duck.

According to Wilson, Parton offered her a piece of advice that was both simple and deeply personal.

She told Wilson that while it was wonderful that Duck allowed her to be herself, Wilson also needed to make sure she allowed him to be himself.

It was the kind of observation Wilson said she would remember.

But their conversation also turned toward faith.

Parton encouraged Wilson to take her time reading the Book of Revelation, suggesting that she might need to return to Psalms for a moment simply to catch her breath.

Wilson said they spoke about how both women felt they had been called into the entertainment business.

Then came a statement from Parton that Wilson would remember after her death.

Parton told her she felt she wasn’t finished yet.

For Wilson, those words now carry an entirely different weight.

She wrote that Parton’s work was not finished because of the love and light she had shared throughout her life — something Wilson believes will continue long after her passing.

Rather than viewing Parton solely through the lens of her enormous career, Wilson’s tribute focused on the person behind the legend: the friend who offered advice, talked about faith and encouraged those around her.

Wilson also expressed gratitude for the gift Parton had been given and for her decision to share that gift with the world.

And she ended with a touching image of seeing her friend again someday.

Wilson joked that when they meet in heaven, she can already imagine Parton greeting her with the same familiar warning she had apparently given her before:

“Don’t mess up hair, Lainey girl.”

Then came the words that perhaps summed up the entire tribute:

“I will always love you, my friend.”

Wilson’s belief that Parton’s work was not finished may prove especially poignant as plans for the singer’s legacy continue to unfold.

Parton died following a short battle with cancer at age 80, but her team has made clear that fans have not seen the last of her work.

According to Parton’s longtime manager Danny Nozell, the singer had spent years working with a team she personally selected to create a roadmap for projects that could continue for decades.

That roadmap includes unreleased music, books, products, experiences and other projects connected to Parton’s name.

Among the projects in development are a Nashville hotel and museum, jewelry, pet and home products, as well as a Parton-themed avatar show.

There are also plans involving a documentary about her Broadway musical, a biopic, a docuseries, a scripted series and an animated Billy the Kid project.

For fans, those projects mean Dolly’s creative presence will continue to be felt.

For Wilson, however, the most lasting part of Parton’s legacy may be much more personal: the conversations, advice and friendship she left behind.

And perhaps that is what makes Wilson’s final conversation with Parton so meaningful.

The country icon may be gone, but the words she shared with the people she loved are still being carried forward.
