The 1% Club’s 70% Question Wipes Out 21 Contestants — And Viewers Say It Was Far Harder Than It Looked

A question supposedly answerable by 70% of people caused unexpected carnage on The 1% Club, eliminating 21 contestants in a single round and leaving plenty of viewers at home just as confused.

The ITV game show, hosted by Lee Mack, begins with questions that most people should be able to solve before gradually increasing the difficulty until reaching the notorious 1% challenge.

But during this episode, it wasn’t one of the later questions that caused the biggest headache.

Instead, six ordinary words and three possible answers were enough to catch out a surprisingly large section of the studio.

The 70% Question That Caused Trouble

Unlike traditional quiz shows, The 1% Club isn’t primarily about remembering facts. Contestants are tested on logic, observation and reasoning instead.

During the episode, which aired in October, players reached the 70% round and were shown this sequence:

Hot — Hard — Small — Cold — Easy — ?

They were asked what should replace the question mark and given three choices:

A) Big
B) Fast
C) Slow

At first glance, there appeared to be several possible ways of interpreting the sequence. With the clock running, contestants had to identify the relationship between the words and select their answer.

When the results appeared, the scale of the damage surprised even Lee.

A remarkable 21 contestants had answered incorrectly and were eliminated — an unusually large number for a 70% question.

As their seats turned blue, Lee joked: “Wow. There are now more blue people than a Smurf convention.”

The Answer Was Hidden in the Opposites

The correct choice was A) Big.

The key wasn’t to treat all six words as one conventional sequence. Instead, contestants needed to notice that words appearing in different positions formed pairs of opposites.

Hot → Cold

Hard → Easy

That left Small, meaning its corresponding opposite needed to complete the pattern.

The missing word was therefore:

Small → Big

Explaining the solution, Lee said: “The words all have an opposite within the sequence. Hot/Cold and Hard/Easy. Big replaces the question mark as the opposite of small.”

Simple once the pattern was revealed — but considerably harder when contestants had only a limited amount of time to spot it.

Viewers Were Stumped Too

The unusually high elimination wasn’t confined to the studio.

Viewers following along from home also struggled with the puzzle, with some arguing that it felt considerably tougher than the sort of question normally expected at the 70% stage.

That’s part of what makes The 1% Club so unpredictable. A question’s difficulty doesn’t necessarily depend on complicated mathematics or obscure knowledge. Sometimes the challenge is simply recognising which pattern you’re supposed to be looking for.

And this wasn’t the only occasion when an apparently easier round caused widespread trouble.

During a Christmas special, more than a quarter of the contestants were eliminated by an 80% question, showing that even the early stages can produce unexpectedly brutal results.

More The 1% Club Specials Are Coming

Fans will have more opportunities to test themselves as the current season continues.

Two additional specials are also on the way, including a Valentine’s edition and the programme’s first-ever children’s version.

If the 70% puzzle is any indication, contestants shouldn’t assume that an early-round question will necessarily mean an easy ride.

For 21 players, three pairs of everyday words were all it took to bring their run on The 1% Club to an abrupt end.
