Brad Paisley Fights Back Emotion During Dolly Parton Tribute as ‘When I Get Where I’m Going’ Takes on Heartbreaking New Meaning

Brad Paisley honors Dolly Parton at his first concert since her death

Brad Paisley never expected one of the most emotional songs of his career to become a farewell to Dolly Parton.

Just two days after Parton’s death, Paisley returned to the stage in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and performed “When I Get Where I’m Going,” the 2005 song he originally recorded with Dolly about a peaceful afterlife free from pain and sorrow.

This time, the words landed differently.

As images of Parton appeared on the screens behind him and the crowd quietly sang along, Paisley appeared visibly emotional while revisiting a song that had once been about other people he had lost.

Now, he told the audience, it was about Dolly.

Paisley’s first tribute came on social media

Shortly after Parton’s death, Paisley shared a clip from the “When I Get Where I’m Going” music video alongside an emotional message reflecting on what Dolly had meant to him.

“I never imagined this day would come,” he wrote.

Paisley said getting to know Parton had changed his life, while also acknowledging the enormous effect she had on countless others.

“She seemed immortal,” he wrote, adding that in the spirit of the song they recorded together, he believed she still was.

Paisley closed his message by calling Dolly his hero and reflecting on the music, goodness and generosity she left behind.

“It won’t be the same down here without you Dolly,” he wrote. “We will always love you.”

Kimberly Williams-Paisley also remembered Dolly

Paisley’s wife, actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, shared her own memories of Parton.

She recalled first meeting Dolly around the time Parton recorded “When I Get Where I’m Going” with Brad.

Years later, Williams-Paisley would work with her again on a Netflix project connected to Dolly’s song “Jolene.”

In her tribute, she focused not only on Parton’s extraordinary talent but also on the impact she made away from the stage.

Williams-Paisley highlighted Dolly’s work helping children develop a love of reading, her encouragement of kindness and acceptance, and her accomplishments as both a businesswoman and philanthropist.

“Dolly will always live on in her music and in our hearts,” she wrote. “And we will always love her.”

Paisley returned to the stage two days later

"We love you, Dolly" on the screen behind Brad Paisley

Paisley resumed his tour on August 27, two days after Parton’s passing.

He performed at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where fans expected that Dolly would somehow be part of the evening.

Paisley played roughly 20 songs during the show.

But one selection stood apart.

About 12 songs into the set, his band left the stage for a break, leaving Paisley alone with an acoustic guitar.

At first, he simply picked quietly at the instrument while conversations continued throughout the audience.

Then the opening of “When I Get Where I’m Going” became recognizable.

The mood immediately shifted.

An audible reaction moved through the crowd, and one woman could be heard saying, “Oh boy…”

Dolly’s photographs appeared as the song unfolded

Paisley began singing while the audience joined him.

During the first chorus, photographs of Parton from different stages of her life started appearing on the screens behind the stage.

As the performance continued, the tribute became increasingly personal.

By the final chorus, two photographs showing Paisley with Dolly appeared.

The performance ended with the words “We love you, Dolly” displayed behind him.

One black-and-white image of Parton gradually changed into color, adding another emotional layer to the moment.

When the song ended, Paisley turned toward Dolly’s image.

He stood looking at the screen with his hands pressed over his heart.

There was little else that needed to be said.

Paisley later explained how Dolly originally joined the song

After finishing the tribute, Paisley shared the story of how Parton came to sing on “When I Get Where I’m Going.”

When he first recorded the track, he sent it to Dolly and told her that it had been inspired by people in his own life who had died.

He wasn’t sure whether the lyrics would connect with her personally.

According to Paisley, Dolly immediately understood the song.

“Yes, let me sing on that,” he recalled her telling him.

She did, adding the unmistakable “Hallelujah” vocal that became one of the recording’s most memorable moments.

The song was deeply personal even before Dolly’s death

Paisley told the audience that around the time the song was recorded, he had recently lost his aunt to cancer.

When he first heard the finished mix, Dolly’s voice affected him deeply.

He remembered sitting alone in his car listening to her contribution.

Her “Hallelujah” stayed with him.

For years, the song carried the memory of people Paisley had already lost.

But standing onstage after Dolly’s death, he found himself confronting a meaning he had never imagined when they made it together.

“And now… here we are,” Paisley said.

“I never thought it would be about her, but it is.”

‘It’s everything she believed’

That realization made the Bridgeport performance more than a standard concert tribute.

“When I Get Where I’m Going” describes the hope of reaching a place where suffering has ended — where fear, pain and earthly burdens are gone.

Paisley said those ideas reflected Dolly’s own beliefs.

“It’s everything she believed,” he told the crowd.

The song that had once united them as collaborators had become Paisley’s way of saying goodbye.

He ended his remarks with words that echoed both Dolly’s most famous song and his earlier social media tribute.

“We will always love you, Dolly.”

One of their most meaningful collaborations now carries a new legacy

Paisley later shared video of the live performance without adding a caption.

The song itself carried the message.

For years, “When I Get Where I’m Going” had been remembered as a moving collaboration between two major country artists.

After Parton’s death, it now holds another layer of meaning.

The recording preserves Dolly’s voice singing about peace beyond loss.

And Paisley’s emotional performance in Connecticut turned that message back toward the woman who had helped make the song so powerful in the first place.

He once asked Dolly to help him sing about people who were gone.

More than two decades later, he found himself singing those same words for her.
