Final Moments of Man Killed by Tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park Revealed in Haunting Instagram Footage
A disturbing Instagram video believed to have been recorded by William Chapman shortly before his death has revealed the moments leading up to a fatal tiger attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The footage shows him approaching the animal inside its enclosure as alarmed visitors react in the background, unaware that the encounter is about to end in tragedy.
Chapman, a man in his 20s, died on Saturday, October 10, after entering the enclosure of a Siberian tiger named Altai at the wildlife park near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
The newly reported footage, apparently uploaded to Chapman’s Instagram account shortly before the attack, offers a troubling glimpse of his final moments. As he moves closer to the tiger, his heavy breathing can be heard alongside increasingly concerned reactions from people nearby.
The short recording ends abruptly, leaving the fatal encounter itself unseen.

Instagram Video Captures Chapman’s Approach to the Tiger
According to reports by The Telegraph, Chapman shared several photographs on social media on the day he died, including a gym selfie and an image of himself posing with a Bible and a bow and arrow.
In the latter photograph, he was wearing the same tracksuit later seen in footage of the incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
However, it was another Instagram upload that attracted particular attention following his death.
The brief video, believed to have been filmed from inside the tiger enclosure, shows the animal resting on an elevated wooden platform as Chapman gradually moves towards it.
The tiger appears to be watching him while the camera continues to approach. Chapman’s breathing is clearly audible throughout the clip.
Voices from nearby visitors can also be heard expressing alarm. At least one person exclaims, “Oh my God,” while others appear to react to the danger unfolding in front of them.
Moments later, the recording stops.
The BBC reported that Chapman’s Instagram account was subsequently removed, although copies of the footage had already circulated online.
Witnesses Describe Desperate Attempts to Prevent the Tragedy
Chapman reportedly entered the tiger’s enclosure after climbing down from an elevated visitor walkway.
Witnesses described a rapidly developing emergency as people nearby realised he was moving into an area occupied by a dangerous predator.
One visitor, Anthony Hunt, told The Telegraph that a woman accompanied by two children had attempted to prevent Chapman from entering the enclosure.
According to Hunt, she tried to pull him back but was unable to stop him.
Other witnesses described attempts to distract the tiger after it approached Chapman. Despite those efforts, the animal attacked, and Chapman suffered fatal injuries.
Emergency services were contacted shortly after 1:30 p.m. Police later confirmed that Chapman had been visiting the park alone and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Disturbing Footage Raises Questions About an Unusual Hand Gesture
Separate footage circulating on social media appears to show part of the encounter between Chapman and Altai.
In the recording, the tiger can be seen moving around Chapman before striking him and pulling at his clothing.
One particularly unusual detail attracted attention online: Chapman appeared to clench his fist while extending his little finger towards the animal.
Some social media users suggested the gesture resembled a sign from Makaton, a communication system that uses gestures, symbols and spoken language to help people with communication difficulties.
One user on X claimed the movement could represent the word “bad” in Makaton.
Unlike conventional sign languages, Makaton is designed to support spoken communication through visual cues, making it useful for people who experience difficulties with speech, language or understanding.
However, there has been no official confirmation that Chapman intended to use Makaton during the encounter. The significance of the gesture remains uncertain, and online interpretations do not establish what he was attempting to communicate.
Still from footage circulated online and purportedly connected to the incident.
Chapman’s Family Speaks About His Personal Struggles
Following the tragedy, Chapman’s family disclosed that he had experienced significant mental health difficulties over several years.
In a statement reported by British media, relatives said he had been prescribed strong medication before his death.
The family stressed that determining whether his mental health or medication contributed to the circumstances surrounding the incident was a matter for the coroner.
Their comments provided further context about Chapman’s life, although the precise reasons for his decision to enter the enclosure have not been established.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park Confirms Altai Will Not Be Euthanised
Following the fatal incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park addressed concerns about the future of Altai, the Siberian tiger involved in the attack.
Park officials confirmed that the animal would not be euthanised and reassured the public that he remained safe and in good health.
Altai belongs to the endangered Amur tiger subspecies, also known as the Siberian tiger.
He was born at Dyreparken Zoo in Norway before being transferred to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in 2025 as part of efforts to protect and maintain populations of these endangered big cats.
He shares the park’s tiger habitat with a female named Tschuna.
The park’s confirmation brought clarity to one of the major questions raised in the aftermath of Chapman’s death, particularly as footage of the incident continued circulating across social media.

Health and Safety Investigation Launched Following Fatal Attack
The incident has also prompted an official examination of safety procedures at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
Doncaster City Council, the authority responsible for licensing the attraction, confirmed that it had launched a health and safety investigation.
Officials are working with police, health services and the wildlife park to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
The park was evacuated following the attack and remained closed in the days afterward as authorities continued their work.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances in which Chapman accessed the enclosure, while the precise sequence of events remains subject to official scrutiny.
Inside Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s Land of the Tigers
Yorkshire Wildlife Park first opened in 2009, with its dedicated Land of the Tigers attraction welcoming visitors in 2011.
The habitat was designed to accommodate Siberian tigers while allowing visitors to observe the animals from designated viewing areas.
An elevated walkway provides views across the enclosure, giving guests an opportunity to see the tigers in surroundings intended to reflect elements of their natural environment.
The attraction also plays a role in raising awareness of the conservation challenges facing the species.
Siberian tigers are endangered, with wild populations estimated in the hundreds. Conservation and breeding programmes remain important to their long-term survival.

Questions Remain Over the Final Minutes Before the Attack
Although the footage offers a clearer picture of Chapman’s movements shortly before his death, it does not fully explain why he entered the enclosure or what he expected to happen when he approached Altai.
Reports from visitors, the Instagram recording and footage shared afterward have helped establish parts of the timeline, but several aspects remain unresolved.
The video captures an especially unsettling contrast: the tiger resting on its platform, Chapman steadily approaching, and the alarm spreading among those watching from outside.
Within minutes, the encounter had become a fatal emergency.
As investigators continue examining the tragedy, Chapman’s final social media posts remain a distressing record of the events preceding his death, while his family and the wider community are left confronting the consequences of an incident that unfolded in full view of park visitors.
