Wait… How Was 14 People Erased Like That? Everyone Knows The Alphabet — And That’s Exactly Why This Looked Almost Impossible To Get Wrong. The 1% Club’s Innocent Mirror-Letter Puzzle Seemed Like Easy Territory, Until The Clock Stopped And A Staggering 14 Contestants Had Been Caught By The Same Deceptively Simple Trap

The 1% Club Wipes Out 14 Players With One Letter — And The 50% Question Looks Almost Ridiculously Easy Until You Try It Against The Clock

Screenshot of a man in a suit.

Fourteen contestants were eliminated from The 1% Club by a question requiring no maths, no obscure knowledge and no complicated wordplay.

All they had to do was think about the alphabet.

More specifically, they had 30 seconds to work out which capital letter comes second when looking for letters that appear unchanged in a mirror.

It sounds like something that should take only a few seconds.

But when the answers were locked in, 14 players were gone.

Their mistakes added another £14,000 to the prize pot and pushed the jackpot to £49,000 — all because of one deceptively ordinary letter.

Could You Find The Letter In 30 Seconds?

Screenshot of a game show question: "A is the first capital letter in the alphabet that looks the same in the mirror. What is the second?"

Unlike conventional quiz shows, The 1% Club is not primarily interested in how many facts contestants can remember.

The ITV programme, hosted by Lee Mack since 2022, begins with 100 contestants and tests their logic, reasoning and common sense.

Questions are assigned percentages based on how many members of the public are expected to answer them correctly.

The further contestants progress, the lower those percentages become until the survivors eventually reach the notorious 1% question.

But this particular mass elimination happened much earlier.

It was a 50% question.

Players were told:

“A is the first capital letter in the alphabet that looks the same in a mirror. What is the second?”

That was it.

One letter required.

Thirty seconds to find it.

Game show set with audience and question: "A is the first capital letter in the alphabet that looks the same in the mirror. What is the second?"

The Obvious Instinct Can Send You In The Wrong Direction

The question becomes trickier once you actually start mentally moving through the alphabet.

A has already been given.

So what comes next?

B?

C?

D?

E?

F?

The important detail is that the letter must look the same in a mirror.

Screenshot of a game show question: "A" is the first capital letter in the alphabet that looks the same in the mirror. What is the second? The answer "H" is displayed.

That means contestants need to think about vertical symmetry.

A standard capital A has it. Place a vertical mirror through its center and the two sides correspond.

Now continue through the alphabet.

B does not work.

Neither do C, D, E, F or G.

Then you reach:

H.

A capital H has vertical symmetry, so its mirror image remains H.

Therefore the answer is:

H.

Fourteen Contestants Still Didn’t Find It

Screenshot of the game show "14 Out," showing 55 contestants remaining.

Once the answer appears on screen, the puzzle can look almost laughably straightforward.

Against a ticking clock, however, 14 contestants either selected an incorrect answer or needed to use their pass.

That made the round particularly costly.

On The 1% Club, each eliminated contestant contributes another £1,000 to the potential prize fund.

Fourteen eliminations therefore meant another:

£14,000.

By the end of the round, the jackpot had climbed to £49,000.

It was an unusually dramatic outcome for a question based on something as familiar as the alphabet.

Why Such A Simple Question Becomes Difficult

The puzzle is a good example of how The 1% Club can make familiar information suddenly feel much less obvious.

Nobody needs to know an obscure historical date or remember a scientific formula.

The alphabet is known by virtually every contestant.

The difficulty lies in changing how you look at it.

Instead of thinking about letters as sounds or their usual alphabetical sequence, players have to visualize their physical shapes and imagine each one reflected.

And they have to do it quickly.

There is also another potential trap.

Because contestants know The 1% Club specializes in hidden tricks, an apparently simple question can encourage them to search for complexity that is not actually there.

Sometimes the safest route is simply to follow the instruction literally.

One Letter Turned Into £14,000

The elimination also demonstrated the unusual relationship between failure and the jackpot on the show.

Every contestant wants to survive.

But every contestant who leaves makes the potential prize more valuable for everyone who remains.

So while 14 players saw their game end over H, the survivors suddenly had considerably more money to chase.

The prize fund reached £49,000, and the questions continued becoming harder as the remaining contestants moved closer to the final.

That simple mirror puzzle had dramatically changed the game.

The Show Was Preparing An Even Bigger Twist

Screenshot of a game show displaying a £49,000 prize.

The episode came as ITV was preparing a major expansion of the familiar 1% Club format.

Rather than appearing only in its usual Saturday-night slot, the programme was set to become a five-night event, with episodes airing across consecutive weekdays.

The biggest change involved the money.

Under the new rollover format, an unclaimed jackpot would no longer necessarily disappear at the end of an episode.

Instead, it could move into the following show.

That created the possibility of much larger prizes.

The Jackpot Could Reach £500,000

The format was subsequently confirmed by ITV as The 1% Club Rollover.

The central game remained familiar: contestants still faced the same style of logic, reasoning and common-sense challenges.

But the rollover mechanism raised the stakes dramatically.

If the jackpot was not won, the money could carry into the next episode.

Contestants who reached the 1% question could also return for the following show.

Across the five-night event, that meant the potential prize could continue growing.

If enough money remained unclaimed, up to £500,000 could theoretically be available on the final 1% question.

For a programme where one letter can eliminate 14 people, that possibility added a completely different level of pressure.

The Question Is Easy — Once You Know The Answer

That is the peculiar brilliance of questions like the mirror puzzle.

After the explanation, there seems to be almost nothing to solve.

A is the first capital letter with the required symmetry.

Work through the alphabet.

The next is:

H.

But 14 contestants discovered that knowing something is easy after the answer appears is very different from finding it while a 30-second clock is disappearing.

No calculation was necessary.

No specialist knowledge was required.

Just one familiar alphabet, one imaginary mirror and one letter hiding seven places after A.

H.

For 14 contestants, it was enough to end the game.

For everyone still standing, it was worth another £14,000.

The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and is available to watch on ITVX.
