Alicia Keys’ Son Egypt Opens Knicks Parade Performance on Piano
Before Alicia Keys sang a single note, she stepped back.
Her son Egypt, 15, sat down at the piano. He played the opening bars of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” before Alicia transitioned into “Empire State of Mind,” the song that has become New York’s modern anthem — as hundreds of thousands of people packed lower Broadway, the same Canyon of Heroes that had waited 53 years for this particular parade. Why Egypt Opened It
Alicia Keys was born in Hell’s Kitchen. She learned the piano at six. She has spent her entire career as the musical embodiment of what New York believes about itself — that it produces something that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Egypt Daoud Dean was born in New York City in 2010. At eleven, he performed alone in front of 17,000 people at one of his mother’s concerts in Mannheim, Germany. She wrote afterward that she had been nervous, and that she had nothing to worry about.
On Thursday, she handed him the song.
“Me and my son Egypt, we thought that we would do it like this,” she told the crowd. It was a decision made in advance. She could have opened with the anthem herself. Instead, she arranged for a 15-year-old from New York to play the first notes of New York’s song at New York’s loudest day in half a century.
Egypt was born in 2010.
The Knicks were already deep into their championship drought.
He was born the year the wait continued.
He played the song the year it ended.
Why the Sound System Failing Made It Better
The audio cut out before Keys reached the stage. “Empire State of Mind” began, stopped, began again. The crowd didn’t disperse. They got louder.
