Sam Neill Passes Away: Cause of Death and Last Movie Role Explained

The movie world mourns the loss of Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor who brought warmth and gravity to global blockbusters, including the Jurassic Park franchise. The actor has died at the age of 78. The news was confirmed by his family in a social media post.
In the post, Neill’s family confirmed that he had passed away on Monday, July 13, 2026, in Sydney, Australia. According to the post, he was under the care of the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. The post also said that more information surrounding his death will be shared later.
His role as Dr. Alan Grant, the awestruck paleontologist gazing up at dinosaurs in Steven Spielberg’s epic, is always memorable to all generations of movie lovers. His remarkable career stretched beyond that iconic role, including major Hollywood movies and small independent dramas. He was knighted in 2022 as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Sam Neill’s Cause of Death Explained

As of now, Sam Neill’s family has not disclosed a specific cause of death, describing his passing only as sudden and unexpected. What they have shared is that he died peacefully, surrounded by family. The post also noted that he remained free of the cancer he had fought so hard to beat.
Neill had lived with stage 3 blood cancer, a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, since 2023, quietly undergoing treatment while continuing to act and write. He revealed the diagnosis in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?. He shared with The Guardian at the time, “I’m not afraid to die, but it would annoy me.”
Earlier this year, he revealed that an Australian CAR T-cell therapy clinical trial had left him cancer-free. He shared, “I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing. I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was among the first to pay tribute, honoring the actor’s place in the stories his adopted home holds dear.
Neill leaves behind a body of work spanning nearly five decades. During his interview with 7News in April, he shared, “It’s time I did another movie.” There are a few works of Neill that will be released posthumously.
