Joe Henley Earns Riley Green’s First ‘The Voice’ Team Spot With Travis Tritt Classic

Riley Green’s first season as a coach on The Voice got off to a memorable start when 19-year-old Joe Henley delivered a powerful version of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” and immediately turned two chairs.

The Alabama singer had never performed a professional gig before stepping onto the The Voice stage, but that quickly changed when both Green and Kelly Clarkson responded to the opening notes of his audition.

Joe Henley Turns Two Chairs

Season 30 of The Voice premiered Monday, September 21, introducing viewers to Green in his first season as a coach.

Among the first artists to audition was Henley, a 19-year-old Alabama native who already had Green among his favorite artists. Before taking the stage, Henley admitted that he hoped Green and Clarkson would both turn so he could watch the two coaches compete for him.

“I’ve never done a gig,” Henley revealed before his audition.

That lack of professional experience did not show once he began singing.

Henley chose Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” for his Blind Audition, and within the opening moments, both Green and Clarkson turned their chairs.

The performance gave Henley exactly the coaching showdown he had hoped for.

Riley Green Takes the Stage With Joe

After Henley finished his audition, Green joined him onstage for an unexpected performance of his latest single, “My Way.”

With Green playing guitar, the two singers traded lines and performed the song together, giving Henley another opportunity to share the stage with the coach he had admired before entering the competition.

When it was finally time for Henley to make his decision, the outcome was perhaps fitting.

He chose Riley Green, becoming the country star’s first team member of Season 30.

Clarkson took the result in good spirits and congratulated Green on landing the young singer. She even suggested that Henley could ultimately help the rookie coach go all the way.

“He could win you The Voice,” Clarkson told Green.

Green Wants Country Artists on His Team

Green has already made his strategy for the competition clear.

The country singer said he wants to bring as many country artists as possible onto his team, believing that a country performer has a strong opportunity to win the season.

“I want to get all of them,” Green said. “Because I think there’s a great chance of a country artist winning the whole show.”

Henley became the first artist to join that strategy after choosing Green over Clarkson.

For a singer who had never performed a professional gig, the Alabama teenager’s first night on The Voice ended with a chair-turn, a duet with one of his musical heroes and a place on Team Riley.
