Riley Green Uses His Signature Duck Call to Make His Case to BigCountry on ‘The Voice’

Riley Green had a memorable way of making his pitch to BigCountry on The Voice — and it involved one of his signature duck calls.

Ahead of the Season 30 premiere, NBC shared a first look at the Blind Auditions featuring BigCountry, a 37-year-old singer from Tacoma, Washington, who delivered a soulful rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” and earned a coveted three-chair turn.

The performance immediately caught the attention of the coaches. Adam Levine was the first to turn his chair, with Queen Latifah following soon after. Green listened closely and appeared to be enjoying the performance before eventually pressing his button as well.

For BigCountry’s family and friends watching from backstage, the moment was clearly emotional as the singer secured three potential coaches.

Kelly Clarkson Had One Regret

Kelly Clarkson watched the performance closely, smiling and nodding along, but ultimately chose not to turn her chair.

After the song ended, Levine stood to applaud as the coaches and audience celebrated BigCountry’s performance. Clarkson then admitted she was already second-guessing her decision.

“Now I feel like a complete moron!” she said.

Clarkson later explained that she had been waiting for BigCountry to show another side of his voice.

“I’m so excited to see what you’re going to do. The only reason I didn’t turn is I was just waiting for that next little level,” she explained. “I was like, ‘Is he going to show me some falsetto?’ But man, Big Country, you are one hell of a singer, man. Welcome to the show.”

With Clarkson out of the running, the other three coaches turned their attention to convincing BigCountry to join their teams.

Riley Green Brings Out the Duck Call

Levine reminded BigCountry that he had been the first coach to turn his chair.

Green, meanwhile, took a much more playful approach. The country star pulled out his signature duck call, drawing laughs from both the coaches and the audience.

The friendly rivalry continued as Green and Levine traded shots before Queen Latifah made her own case.

“You got it. You got it,” she told BigCountry, praising the emotion behind his performance.

“You just did that song from your heart for the people. And that’s what I felt,” she continued. “We’ve heard it done many ways, but never like that…I want to see you win this.”

Queen Latifah then told him she would be happy to coach him and do whatever was necessary to help him make the most of his time on the show.

Green Makes a More Personal Pitch

After the applause died down, Green shifted from jokes to a more serious argument. Pulling out his cowboy hat, he explained why he believed BigCountry could fit naturally on his team even though his audition was rooted in soul rather than traditional country music.

“Listen, being country is not about singing the genre of country music. It’s about telling a story about how you grew up, where you’re from, what you believe in,” Green explained.

He argued that those qualities could come through regardless of whether BigCountry preferred country, hip-hop, rap or soul.

“What you just did was you sang something that had soul in it, but had roots like country music does. And that’s what I was drawn to,” he added.

The coaches continued their back-and-forth attempts to win BigCountry over, but viewers will have to watch the premiere to discover which coach ultimately gets his attention.

The Voice Season 30 premieres September 21 with a packed three-night premiere week, beginning with the Blind Auditions.

For BigCountry, the first performance has already delivered one of the night’s biggest milestones: three coaches turned their chairs, leaving him with a major decision before the competition truly gets underway.
