One surprising royal rule means Princess Eugenie’s newborn daughter won’t become a Princess — despite having a Princess for a mother and securing a place in the line of succession. The baby girl, born in Portugal earlier this month, is now 15th in line to the throne, but her arrival has exposed a little-known distinction within the monarchy. While Eugenie has carried her title since birth, she cannot simply pass that same status to her daughter — and the reason lies in the way royal titles travel through the family.

The royal, 36, has welcomed a daughter with her husband, Jack Brooksbank, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. But will the new baby be a Princess?

Princess Eugenie has welcomed a baby girl with her husband Jack Brooksbank – but will the newest royal receive a title?

The daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson announced the birth of her third child earlier this month, weighing 6lb and 9oz and born in a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal.

Eugenie has been a Princess since birth, so some may assume that her baby, who is yet to be named, would also receive a royal title.

However, her royal sons, August, five, and Ernest, three, do not have titles, and it’s expected it will be the same for baby girl Brooksbank.

Why do Princess Eugenie’s children not have titles?

Eugenie’s three children do not have British royal titles as they are not direct grandchildren of the reigning monarch, King Charles.

Royal rules dictate that only the children and grandchildren of the monarch through the male line can be granted the title of “Prince” or “Princess”.

Jack was not given a title by the late Queen when he married Eugenie, meaning their children go by “Master” or “Miss” instead.

Mother-of-three Eugenie is not a working royal and spends much of her time in Portugal, where she and Jack have a home. She’s also a director at art gallery Hauser & Wirth. Her sister, Princess Beatrice, works for the tech company Afiniti.

Royal author Robert Jobson told HELLO! previously: “The royal sisters have both avoided complications for their children by avoiding royal and aristocratic titles.

“Their children are simply August and Ernest Brooksbank and Sienna and Athena Mapelli Mozzi. It means less scrutiny and means they can avoid the burden of being truly public figures.”

However, Eugenie’s three children are still in the line of succession. Her daughter is 15th in line to the throne.

Why Princess Beatrice’s children have titles but Eugenie’s do not

Beatrice’s daughters may be entitled to their own titles, though it’s unrelated to the royal family in the UK. Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, has Italian heritage and is a Count, making the Princess a Countess, or ‘Countessa’ as well as ‘Nobile Donna’.

The use of titles of nobility is not currently recognised by the Italian state, but they can still be used out of courtesy. The revelation was made by Princess Beatrice’s father-in-law, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi.

Beatrice’s stepson Wolfie is therefore entitled to be known as “Count”, while daughters Sienna, four, and Athena, one, can be called “Nobile Donna” and “countesses”.
