Giants’ Emotional 9/11 Tribute Leaves NFL Fans With Chills During Season Opener

The New York Giants turned their 2026 season opener into a powerful night of remembrance, honoring the victims and heroes of September 11 before facing the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

Just two days after the 25th anniversary of the attacks, the Giants held an emotional pregame ceremony that brought together first responders, players, coaches, former Giants stars and fans. The centerpiece was a special rendition of the U.S. national anthem performed by a joint group of NYPD and FDNY members.

The performance, delivered a cappella by the uniformed first responders, quickly drew an emotional response from viewers. Fans on social media described the rendition as “incredible,” “gorgeous” and enough to give them “goosebumps.”

One viewer wrote that the performance gave them “full body goosebumps,” while others praised the choice of performers and called the tribute a beautiful way to remember those lost on 9/11.

A Stadium United in Remembrance

Before kickoff, MetLife Stadium fell silent as fans observed a moment of remembrance for the victims of the September 11 attacks.

A photo montage featuring people who lost their lives was displayed across the stadium videoboards. At one end of the field, two vertical columns of light recreated the image of the fallen World Trade Center towers, echoing New York’s annual Tribute in Light memorial.

The ceremony also featured a 100-yard American flag carried by members of both teams, coaches and Giants season-ticket holders. The national anthem was followed by a flyover from New Jersey State Police helicopters.

The evening was part of a broader series of tributes planned by the Giants to mark 25 years since September 11, 2001. The organization said the events were intended to recognize first responders, military members, 9/11 families and the many people whose lives were affected by the attacks.

Remembering the 343 FDNY Firefighters

The tribute began even before fans entered the stadium.

Those arriving at MetLife were welcomed by Ladder 343, a ceremonial FDNY firetruck named in honor of the 343 FDNY members who died on September 11, 2001.

Outside the stadium, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation concluded its Steel Across America tour by displaying an authentic steel beam from the World Trade Center, offering another stark reminder of the destruction caused by the attacks and the resilience that followed.

Players and coaches from both the Giants and Cowboys also wore commemorative NYPD, FDNY and PAPD apparel along with “Never Forget” shirts.

The Giants then entered the field through a gauntlet formed by New York City first responders, making the moment even more personal for the home crowd.

Giants Legends Join the Tribute

The ceremony also brought back several members of the Giants’ 2001 team.

Jessie Armstead, Tiki Barber, Kerry Collins and Jason Sehorn joined uniformed first responders for the traditional “Go Big Blue” chant before kickoff.

Their presence added another connection to the season when the attacks occurred, bringing together members of the Giants organization from 2001 with the current team as the franchise marked the 25th anniversary.

The Giants had specifically planned the September 13 matchup with the Cowboys as their home opener and 9/11 anniversary tribute. The game kicked off at 8:20 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium.

A National Anthem That Resonated

While the ceremony included many moving moments, the national anthem became one of the most widely praised.

Rather than a traditional solo performance, members of the NYPD and FDNY stood together in uniform and delivered the anthem a cappella.

Against the backdrop of the illuminated stadium and the 9/11 remembrance, the stripped-back performance carried a particular weight for the New York crowd.

Fans quickly took to social media to share their reactions, with comments ranging from “chills” to “beautiful 9/11 tribute.” Others praised the fact that first responders themselves were chosen to perform the anthem.

The Giants had announced ahead of the game that the ceremony would include a joint NYPD, FDNY and Port Authority Police Department honor guard, as well as a special national anthem performance by NYPD and FDNY members.

For a franchise playing just miles from New York City, the night was about more than the beginning of another NFL season.

It was a moment to remember the lives lost, honor those who responded, and remind everyone inside MetLife Stadium that 25 years later, the message remains the same: Never Forget.
